Effects of blade airfoil chord length and rotor diameter on aerodynamic performance of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbines by numerical simulation

Guoqiang Tong et al.

Summary: In this study, the aerodynamic characteristics of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbines (SB-VAWTs) were investigated using numerical simulation, with a focus on the effects of airfoil chord length and rotor diameter. A dimensionless parameter RCC was proposed and its recommended ranges were determined for different scenarios. The study confirms the significance of RCC in the design of SB-VAWTs and provides practical references for the parametric structural design.

Enhanced Surface Icephobicity on an Elastic Substrate

Zhiwei He et al.

Summary: Elastic icephobic substrates demonstrate excellent surface icephobicity by enhancing water repellency and reducing ice adhesion strength. The ice adhesion strength can be further lowered by rationally tuning the elastic modulus and surface textures, and combining with other passive anti-icing strategies. The introduction of an elastic substrate into icephobic surface design offers great potential for outdoor anti-icing applications.

Solidification of a hollow sessile droplet under forced convection

Truong V. Vu et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical analysis of the solidification process of a forced convection droplet on a cooling surface. The study found that an increase in the temperature of the forced flow leads to slower solidification, while increasing the flow strength shortens the solidification process. Other parameters such as the capillary number and droplet morphology also affect the solidification process.

Numerical analysis of blade icing influence on the dynamic response of an integrated offshore wind turbine

Zhenju Chuang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a CFD-WTIA coupled method to analyze the blade icing process and its influence on the overall performance of an offshore wind turbine. The results show that the blade icing affects the lift and drag coefficients, which in turn impact the power production, generator torque, rotor speed, and blade vibration.

Wind tunnel tests of the rime icing characteristics of a straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine

Wenfeng Guo et al.

Summary: Icing significantly degrades the performance of wind turbines in cold and humid regions. This study conducted icing wind tunnel tests to explore the characteristics of icing on the blade surface. The experimental results demonstrate that factors such as rotational speed of the blade and tip speed ratio have significant effects on icing characteristics.

Design of Icephobic Surfaces by Lowering Ice Adhesion Strength: A Mini Review

Zhiwei He et al.

Summary: Ice accretion can have severe consequences in daily life and sometimes lead to catastrophic events. Passive icephobic surfaces have gained attention for their ability to repel water droplets, suppress ice nucleation, and lower ice adhesion strength. The key to outdoor anti-icing applications is living with ice but with the lowest ice adhesion strength, achieved through various types of icephobic surfaces.

A field study of ice accretion and its effects on the power production of utility-scale wind turbines

Linyue Gao et al.

Summary: Study examined ice accretion on 50m-long turbine blades and icing-induced power production losses. Found more ice on outboard blades, up to 0.3m thick near blade tips. Theoretical predictions matched field measurements well. Turbines rotated slower and shut down frequently during icing event, with up to 80% power loss. Aimed to bridge gap between lab studies and real-world icing phenomena.
