Anodic alumina photonic crystals: Structure engineering, optical properties and prospective applications

Guoliang Shang et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the related theories, application-oriented structure tailoring, optical properties, and selected applications of anodic alumina photonic crystal. Anodic alumina photonic crystal is a porous periodic dielectric structure that has been extensively studied due to its straightforward preparation processes, porous features, high chemical, and thermal stability. The porous feature of the photonic crystal allows for versatile tailoring of its optical properties and results in strong light scattering.

Functionalized aluminum oxide by immobilization of totally organic aromatic polymer spherical nanoparticles

Shoji Nagaoka et al.

Summary: A novel surface protection method for anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) was developed using environmentally friendly pure organic materials in a one-pot, one-step reaction. Totally organic aromatic polymer spherical nanoparticles (SNPs) immobilized on the AAO surface provided high water repellency and anticorrosivity, as well as increased voltage withstand capability.

The Interrelation of Synthesis Conditions and Wettability Properties of the Porous Anodic Alumina Membranes

Daria Tishkevich et al.

Summary: This article presents the results of studies on the wettability properties and preparation of porous anodic alumina (PAA) membranes with different pore sizes. The research found that the surface properties of alumina can be changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic by adjusting the synthesis conditions. This study is of great significance in designing functional surfaces with tunable wettability.

Surface Functionalized Anodic Aluminum Oxide Membrane for Opto-Nanofluidic SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Target Detection

Megan Makela et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an ultra-thin and highly sensitive SARS-CoV-2 detection platform using a nano-porous anodic aluminum oxide membrane. By immobilizing probe oligonucleotides on the membrane surface, efficient trapping and identification of SARS-CoV-2 genomic targets were achieved through DNA-DNA and DNA-RNA hybridization. The fluorescent signal from the AAO membrane sensors was significantly stronger than that from a flat glass template, indicating a potential for high-throughput virus testing with accurate results.

Nanoporous Alumina Membranes for Sugar Industry: An Investigation of Sintering Parameters Influence onUltrafiltration Performance

Farooq Khan Niazi et al.

Summary: Ultrafiltration membranes play a progressive and efficient role in filtering various process fluids, with their porosity being a key factor influencing performance. Alumina membranes, known for their uniform porosity and mechanical strength, are extensively studied in membrane development. Research on nanoporous alumina membranes focuses on their sintering parameters' impact on ultrafiltration. Increasing sintering temperature and time result in smaller average pore size, with alumina membranes showing excellent performance in ultrafiltration of sugarcane juice.

The influence of the synthesis conditions on the magnetic behaviour of the densely packed arrays of Ni nanowires in porous anodic alumina membranes

Alla Vorobjova et al.

Summary: Densely packed arrays of Ni nanowires with 70 nm diameter and 6-12 μm length were obtained through electrodeposition into porous alumina membranes. The magnetic characteristics of these Ni nanowires, such as coercivity and squareness ratio, were significantly improved under optimized conditions, making them suitable for various applications in magnetic recording media and sensors. This structure is also of great interest for basic research on nanomagnetism due to its distinct magnetic properties compared to bulk and thin film materials.
