Investigation on Slip Activity and Plastic Heterogeneity of Aged Mg-10Y Sheets During Compression

R. Ni et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of precipitates on individual slip activities and plastic heterogeneity during room temperature compression of Mg-10Y sheets. It was found that after peak-aged treatment, the frequency of basal slip increased while pyramidal slips significantly decreased. Most activated slip systems had large normalized Schmid factors, but there were also hard-oriented slip systems, indicating local stress deviation.

Role of non-basal slip systems on the microstructure and texture development of ZXK-Mg alloy deformed in Plane Strain Compression at elevated temperature

J. Victoria-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This work investigates the deformation mechanisms active during high temperature plane strain compression and their impact on the microstructural and texture evolution of an Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr (ZXK) alloy. The study found that the activity of non-basal dislocations and specific slip systems play a crucial role in the formation of texture components in the alloy.

The deformation modes and transferability during low-cycle fatigue of Mg and Mg-3Y alloy

Tianjiao Li et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively and statistically investigated the effects of 3% Y addition on the deformation modes and transferability of Mg sheets during strain-controlled tension-compression low-cycle fatigue at room temperature. The results showed that Mg-3Y alloy exhibited enhanced activity of various slip systems and lower twinning-detwinning activity compared to pure Mg, and it had a higher likelihood of slip transfer.

Understanding the mechanisms of texture evolution in an Mg-2Zn-1Ca alloy during cold rolling and annealing

Xinde Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the texture evolution of a Mg-Zn-Ca plate during cold rolling and subsequent annealing. It was found that basal slip was the main deformation mode and prismatic slip preserved the TD-split texture. Pyramidal slip caused the widening of the basal texture. Grain nucleation occurred at grain boundaries, deformation twins, and near precipitates, with minimal texture change.

Grain size effect on tensile properties and slip systems of pure magnesium

Kang Wei et al.

Summary: The refinement of magnesium grains can enhance both its strength and ductility due to the activation of additional slip systems. Fine-grained magnesium exhibits improved work hardening and ductility compared to coarse-grained magnesium, with the activation of non-basal dislocations playing a key role in enhancing properties. The contributions of nano stacking faults on strengthening and ductilization, as well as their formation mechanism, are discussed in the study.

Slip-twinning interdependent activation across phase boundaries: An in-situ investigation of a Ti-Al-V-Fe (α plus β) alloy

Summary: Microstructural plastic strain distribution evolution is highly heterogeneous even in single-phase alloys. The transfer of slip/twinning across grain/phase boundaries plays a crucial role in governing this heterogeneity. Understanding of the fundamentals of transfer across grain boundaries has received significant attention, while knowledge about phase boundaries remains relatively limited.

Deformation mechanisms of Mg-Ca-Zn alloys studied by means of micropillar compression tests

Summary: The effect of Ca and Zn in solid solution on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of different slip systems in Mg alloys was investigated, revealing changes in plastic anisotropy and twin growth. The results showed that the addition of solute atoms increased the CRSS for basal slip and decreased the CRSS for pyramidal slip, leading to improved ductility and formability in the Mg-Ca-Zn alloys.

Summary: Through systematic design of a low-alloyed Mg-Zn-Ca alloy, improved ductility and strength have been achieved, making it a promising candidate for industrial productions. The co-segregation of Zn and Ca atoms at grain boundaries contributes to the improved ductility of the alloy.
