Dielectric and mechanical properties of hypersonic radome materials and metamaterial design: A review

Taylor Kenion et al.

Summary: This review paper examines ten current ceramic radome materials under research and development and provides a comprehensive overview of available high temperature and high frequency data from literature. An examination of metamaterials for radio-frequency transparent radomes is given and our preliminary experimental results of a high-temperature metamaterial design are presented. The next-generation hypersonic vehicles' radome temperatures will exceed 1000 degrees C and speeds will exceed Mach 5. An ideal radome material will have a high flexural strength, low dielectric constant and loss tangent, and high resistance to thermal shock and corrosion. The microstructural effect on the dielectric and mechanical properties and the effects of environmental factors such as rain are discussed. The impact of metamaterial structure on key radome factors such as boresight error, gain, and polarization is examined. After examining the associated benefits with the use of metamaterials, our preliminary results for a potential high-temperature metamaterial design are presented.

The control of interfacial bonding state and optimization of mechanical properties of Si3N4f/BN/Si3N4 composites via different synthesis technologies

Jie Zhou et al.

Summary: Si3N4f/BN/Si3N4 composites prepared by PIP process exhibit better mechanical properties, with flexural strength and fracture toughness about twice and 1.5 times higher than those prepared by CVI process. Weakening the interfacial bond and achieving a proper modulus matching relationship between fibers and matrix through PIP process significantly enhances the mechanical properties of the composites compared to CVI process.

Failure behavior of interfacial domain in SiC-matrix based composites

Jinxue Ding et al.

Summary: The study investigated the microstructure, failure behavior, and interfacial properties of SiCf/BN/SiC and C-f/PyC/SiC composites using the fiber push-in test. The findings showed differences in the mechanical response of the interfacial domain, with SiCf/BN/SiC experiencing interface debonding accompanied by interphase fracture, while C-f/PyC/SiC exhibited interface debonding along with interphase lateral slipping without any interphase fracture. The calculated interfacial shear stress indicated that C-f/PyC/SiC had a weaker interfacial domain compared to SiCf/BN/SiC.

Effects of heat treatment on mechanical properties of 3D Si3N4f/BN/Si3N4 composites by PIP

Jie Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, three-dimensional silicon nitride fiber-reinforced silicon nitride matrix composites with a boron nitride interphase were fabricated through precursor infiltration and pyrolysis process. The thermal stability of the composites was analyzed by heat treatment at 1000-1200 degrees C, showing changes in flexural strength and fracture toughness with a pattern of decrease followed by increase. The influence mechanisms of heat treatment on the composites include matrix shrinkage, defects formation, and improved interfacial bonding strength.

High temperature ceramic radomes (HTCR)-A review

Abanti Nag et al.

Summary: Radome, an enclosure for radar antenna in military aircraft and missiles, is classified based on function type and operation speed. While composite laminates are suitable for subsonic applications, ceramics are the only option for high-speed military aerospace applications. Silicon nitride based radome materials with controlled porosity are proposed as futuristic high temperature materials for supersonic applications.
