Fabrication of Lead Free Borate Glasses Modified by Bismuth Oxide for Gamma Ray Protection Applications

Yas Al-Hadeethi et al.

Summary: In this study, bismuth borate glass samples were prepared using the melt quenching technique and their shielding ability was evaluated by measuring parameters such as mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) and transmission factor (TF). The results showed that the addition of Bi2O3 improved the shielding performance of the glass and higher energy photons were more easily able to penetrate the glass than lower energy photons.

Summary: The widespread use of ionizing radiation has increased the demand for effective methods of reducing its risks. This study proposes the use of YBCO ceramic mixed with transition metal oxides for radiation shielding. The ceramic composites were successfully prepared and their structural and optical properties were examined. The results show that the current ceramic composites have potential for use as shielding materials against low-energy radiation.

TeO2-SiO2-B2O3 glasses doped with CeO2 for gamma radiation shielding and dosimetry application

Ashwitha Nancy D'Souza et al.

Summary: Bismuth borosilicate glasses doped with increasing concentration of TeO2 were synthesized and their shielding properties for gamma radiation were analyzed. The study also investigated the thermoluminescence intensity and kinetic parameters. Results showed that higher concentrations of TeO2 and CeO2 incorporation led to increased thermoluminescence intensity and trap center density.

Comparison of radiation shielding ability of Bi2O3 micro and nanoparticles for radiation shields

Aljawhara H. Almuqrin et al.

Summary: The radiation attenuation ability of Bi2O3 powder in different sizes was investigated. It was found that the linear attenuation coefficient of micro-sized Bi2O3 is higher than that of nano-sized Bi2O3 when they have the same mass, and the difference between the two samples decreases with increasing photon energy. The mass and thickness required to reduce the initial photon intensity by half were also reported.

Preparation and radiation attenuation properties of ceramic ball clay enhanced with micro and nano ZnO particles

Yas Al-Hadeethi et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally evaluated the radiation shielding properties of ball clays produced with different percentages of micro and nano ZnO. The results showed that ball clay with nano ZnO had a higher linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) and a slightly lower half-value layer (HVL) compared to ball clay with micro ZnO. This suggests that ball clay with nano ZnO is more effective in attenuating radiation in limited spaces.

A novel CaO-K2O-Na2O-P2O5 glass systems for radiation shielding applications

Nuha Al-Harbi et al.

Summary: A novel phosphate-based glass system was synthesized for potential dental applications, with non-toxic compounds and specific chemical composition. The glass showed changes in refractive index, direct energy gap, and gamma-ray shielding capacity with varying P2O5 concentrations. The highest linear attenuation coefficient was observed for glass samples with 40 mol% of P2O5, while the lowest was found for glass samples with 60 mol% of P2O5 compounds.

Summary: The study investigated the radiation shielding performance of epoxy-based composites reinforced with micro and nano Bi2O3 and WO3, showing that nano particles are more effective in attenuating incoming photons than micro particles. Experimental and simulation results demonstrated that composites with higher Bi2O3 and WO3 contents have potential in shielding harmful effects of diagnostic radionuclides utilized in nuclear medicine and imaging devices.
