Thermal diversity affects community responses to warming

Bingzhang Chen

Summary: Scientists often use an exponential equation to model the responses of community metabolic rates to temperature, but this contradicts the unimodal temperature performance curves of individual species and ignores the difference between intraspecific and interspecific temperature sensitivity. This study explores the impact of thermal diversity on community temperature responses and finds that high thermal diversity dampens the community productivity response to temperature due to lower interspecific temperature sensitivity. In addition, high thermal diversity enables the community to better track environmental temperature fluctuation and withstand high temperature inhibition.

Uncertain response of ocean biological carbon export in a changing world

Stephanie A. Henson et al.

Summary: This article discusses the transfer of organic carbon from the upper to the deep ocean, known as the "biological carbon pump," and emphasizes its importance for the global carbon cycle and marine ecosystems. However, there is disagreement among Earth system models regarding the projected response of global export flux to climate change, mainly due to the complexity of the biological carbon pump, making it challenging to observe and model. The article suggests prioritizing key processes and identifying necessary observations to improve the accuracy of models and reduce uncertainties in current and future estimates of carbon cycling in the ocean.

Thermal trait variation may buffer Southern Ocean phytoplankton from anthropogenic warming

Ian W. Bishop et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence and scale of thermal trait variation in Southern Ocean phytoplankton, suggesting that these communities may have the diversity required to withstand projected climate change. The findings highlight the importance of reducing uncertainty in predicting marine ecosystem responses to climate change.

Marine phytoplankton functional types exhibit diverse responses to thermal change

Summary: Marine phytoplankton play a crucial role in global primary production, but their responses to rising temperatures vary greatly, potentially leading to shifts in growth dynamics and community structure in the future ocean.

Major restructuring of marine plankton assemblages under global warming

Fabio Benedetti et al.

Summary: The study found that with ocean warming, the overall richness of marine phytoplankton and zooplankton species increases, and their distribution shifts poleward at an accelerated speed. Zooplankton richness slightly declines in tropical regions but increases in temperate to subpolar latitudes. Climate change may threaten the contribution of plankton communities to ecosystem services.
