Comparison of Anticancer Drug Toxicities: Paradigm Shift in Adverse Effect Profile

Debasish Basak et al.

Summary: The introduction of chemotherapeutics for cancer treatment in the 1940s started with nitrogen mustards that were used as weapons in World War II. Over the past seventy years, treatment options for different types of cancer have evolved. The approval of rituximab in 1997 opened up new possibilities for therapeutic antibodies in solid and hematological cancers. While large molecule antibodies have improved patient survival and quality of life, they also have different adverse effect patterns compared to small molecule chemotherapy. Understanding the differences in adverse effects between agents discovered in the last twenty-five years and before is critical for healthcare professionals.

Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles as Antioxidant or Pro-oxidant Agents

Debanjan Dutta et al.

Summary: This study aims to resolve the contradictory effects of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeONPs) by using zebrafish as a model system. It was found that the biological activity of CeONPs is affected by the capping agent or pH. CeONPs synthesized at alkaline pH showed no toxicity on zebrafish larvae, while those synthesized at acidic pH exhibited toxic effects.

Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles as Antioxidant or Pro-oxidant Agents

Debanjan Dutta et al.

Summary: The study found that the synthesis conditions (pH and capping agents) of CeONPs significantly affect their biological toxicity, with CeONPs synthesized under alkaline conditions showing almost no toxic effects, while those synthesized under acidic conditions are toxic. Furthermore, CeONPs coated with positively charged capping agents exhibit increased toxicity.
