Contribution of Viscoelastic Stress to the Synchronization of Earthquake Cycles on Oceanic Transform Faults

Pengcheng Shi et al.

Summary: Earthquake clustering can be promoted by viscoelastic stress transfer, which is still poorly understood. This study builds a numerical model to investigate the synchronization of earthquakes and finds that viscoelastic stress transfer can promote synchronization. The findings suggest that earthquake synchronization may also occur in other tectonic and structural settings.

Dynamic Rupture Simulations of the 2008 Mw7.9 Wenchuan Earthquake: Implication for Heterogeneous Initial Stress and Complex Multifault Geometry

Rongjiang Tang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the dynamic rupture process of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake using complex computer simulation models. The results are consistent with observed features and help explain the severity of impacts near Yingxiu and Beichuan towns. The study suggests that the fault core zone in the southwestern Beichuan Fault may have been more severely damaged, leading to faster propagation of rupture in the northern portion of the Beichuan Fault. Additionally, the study indicates that the mainshock increased Coulomb failure stress on the Wenchuan-Maoxian Fault, but did not significantly push it closer to failure.

Cascadia megathrust earthquake rupture model constrained by geodetic fault locking

Duo Li et al.

Summary: The study used numerical simulations to investigate the potential influence of geodetic fault locking on earthquake sequences along the Cascadia subduction zone. Results showed that earthquake rupture pattern is strongly controlled by the downdip width of the seismogenic zone, velocity-weakening zone, and earthquake nucleation zone size.

Simultaneous Bayesian Estimation of Non-Planar Fault Geometry and Spatially-Variable Slip

Rishabh Dutta et al.

Summary: The study introduces how to use polynomial parameters to describe non-planar fault geometries and estimates non-planar fault parameters from geodetic data through Bayesian inference. The research shows that assumptions of simple planar fault geometries could bias fault-slip estimations in the presence of significant non-planar geometrical variations.

The stop-start control of seismicity by fault bends along the Main Himalayan Thrust

Sharadha Sathiakumar et al.

Summary: Studies show that a ramp structure in the middle of the seismic zone on the Himalayan megathrust is crucial for explaining the termination of ruptures and the source mechanism of aftershocks. The complexity of fault structures likely plays a role in modulating the seismic cycle, influencing the distribution of rupture sizes and rupture propagation. The presence of a ramp structure in the seismic zone explains the aperiodic and variable nature of ruptures and aftershocks on the Himalayan megathrust.
