Ultralow Melting of Iron Nitrides and the Fe-N-C System at High Pressure

Chaojia Lv et al.

Summary: This study determined the melting temperatures of iron nitrides and carbonitrides, and found that nitrogen-rich metallic liquids likely exist at depths of <1,500 km in the mantle. Raman spectra results indicate N-2 degassing from iron nitride liquids. These findings suggest that low-pressure N-2 degassing in the proto-Earth and nitrogen-rich liquids in the present-day lower mantle play important roles in the redistribution of deep nitrogen through geologic time and space.

Melting of phengite-bearing eclogite at pressures of 4 and 9 GPa relevant to deep regions of a subduction zone

Hans-Joachim Massonne et al.

Summary: Melting experiments with phengite-bearing eclogite and psammopelitic rock powder yielded solidus temperatures at different pressures and compositions. Melts from subducted oceanic crust are unlikely but melange diapirs may partially melt in the mantle wedge, contributing to magmatic arcs.

Melting of the Fe-C-H System and Earth's Deep Carbon-Hydrogen Cycle

Xiaojing Lai et al.

Summary: This study examines the phase relations and melting processes of the Fe-C-H system under high pressure. The results show that the addition of hydrogen can lower the melting point of Fe-C alloy, facilitating the formation of metallic liquids and enhancing the mobility and deep cycling of subducted carbon and hydrogen. Additionally, hydrogen can form hydrides and diamonds with carbon.

Subduction-Driven Volatile Recycling: A Global Mass Balance

D. V. Bekaert et al.

Summary: Volatile elements such as water, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, halogens, and noble gases have played a crucial role in the evolution of Earth and the development of life. Through subduction and volcanic activities, these volatiles are transferred between Earth's surface and mantle reservoirs. While nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur recycling likely began before 2 billion years ago and has remained constant, the efficiency of water and noble gas recycling has been less efficient in the past due to the evolving thermal regime of subduction zones and carrier phase stabilities.

Warm and oxidizing slabs limit ingassing efficiency of nitrogen to the mantle

Colin R. M. Jackson et al.

Summary: This study presents mineral-melt experiments to investigate the behavior of nitrogen during slab dehydration and sediment melting processes. The results show that hydrous fluid is the preferred phase for nitrogen, with pressure and oxygen fugacity being the main factors modulating nitrogen partitioning. The research highlights the potential for highly incompatible nitrogen behavior when slab dehydration occurs along warmer and oxidized subduction geotherms.

Summary: This study demonstrates that labile nitrogen in sediments released during early subduction can be at least partially (if not all) re-fixed into the more refractory metaigneous part of the subducting slab, which facilitates the retention of nitrogen for deep subduction and recycling.

Ammonium Impacts on Vibrations of Hydroxyl and Lattice of Phengite at High Temperature and High Pressure

Weihua Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of hydroxyl and lattice in phengite under high temperature and high pressure conditions using vibrational spectroscopy. The results show that heating has little influence on the strength of hydroxyl bonding, but pressure strengthens hydrogen bonding. Ammonium mainly impacts the dehydration process at high temperatures and pressures.

Effects of Hydrogen on the Phase Relations in Fe-FeS at Pressures of Mars-Sized Bodies

H. Piet et al.

Summary: The study investigated the behavior of the Fe-S-H ternary system at high pressures and temperatures, revealing that at pressures between 23-35 GPa, Fe-H and Fe-S separate while above 35 GPa a new phase appears. These findings are crucial for understanding the structure and dynamics of the Martian core and cores of Mars-sized exoplanets.

High-Pressure Phase Stability and Thermoelastic Properties of Iron Carbonitrides and Nitrogen in the Deep Earth

Shengxuan Huang et al.

Summary: Iron-dominant metallic phases are likely the primary hosts for nitrogen in the lower mantle and core. The phase stability of iron carbonitrides mainly depends on the N/C ratio, and the elastic properties are dominantly affected by the Fe/(N+C) ratio. Various iron carbonitride structures may be the main host for nitrogen in the deep mantle.
