Location of the Lhasa terrane in the Late Cretaceous and its implications for crustal deformation

Yiming Ma et al.

Summary: The Cenozoic crustal deformation of the Asian continent is constrained by the location of its southern margin in the Late Cretaceous, which aligns with its present-day orientation. Paleomagnetic analysis of redbeds in the Linzhou Basin indicates a convergence of latitudes within Asia since the Late Cretaceous.

Paleomagnetic and geochronological results of the Risong Formation in the western Lhasa Terrane: Insights into the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision and stratal age

Suo Wang et al.

Summary: By studying the Risong Formation redbeds and volcanic rocks in the western Lhasa terrane, it was determined that the Risong Formation redbeds were formed during the Early Cretaceous, contrary to previous assignments to the Late Jurassic. Through paleomagnetic records and geochronological analysis, it was confirmed that the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision occurred as early as the Early Cretaceous.

Influence of Data Filters on the Position and Precision of Paleomagnetic Poles: What Is the Optimal Sampling Strategy?

Dieke Gerritsen et al.

Summary: This study shows that the commonly used data filters in the paleomagnetic community cannot effectively identify unreliable paleomagnetic directions. The exclusion of unreliable directions still relies on subjective interpretation by experts, highlighting the importance of making all data available following the FAIR principles. Additionally, data filters that decrease the number of sites have a negative impact on the precision of paleopoles, therefore, more emphasis should be placed on collecting more single-sample sites.

Triple-stage India-Asia collision involving arc-continent collision and subsequent two-stage continent-continent collision

Jie Yuan et al.

Summary: The enigmatic geodynamic processes involved in the India-Asia collision have significant implications for the uplift and deformation of the Tibetan Plateau, as well as the changes in land-sea distribution pattern, monsoon arid environments, and biotic evolution in Central-Eastern Asia. However, the current geodynamic models show discrepancies in the understanding of the collision history. A new hypothesis suggests the existence of the North India Sea during a certain period, and the newly obtained paleomagnetic data further support this hypothesis and refine the collision process.

Jurassic true polar wander recorded by the Lhasa terrane on its northward journey from Gondwana to Eurasia

Zhenyu Li et al.

Summary: Paleomagnetic data can provide constraints on the paleogeographic motion of rocks. This study examines the paleolatitudinal drift history of the Lhasa terrane in southern Tibet and tests the hypothesis of constant plate motion rates. The results support the hypothesis and suggest a similar near-equatorial, paleolatitude as at 180 Ma. This study highlights the importance of paleomagnetic data in understanding plate kinematics.

Cretaceous paleomagnetic and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronological results from the Tethyan Himalaya: Constraints on the Neo-Tethys evolution

Weiwei Bian et al.

Summary: The evolution of the Neo-Tethys Ocean had a profound effect on global climate change and the evolution of life. Paleomagnetic and geochronological research on samples from the Tethyan Himalaya revealed that there was no wide oceanic basin between the Tethyan Himalaya and Indian craton in the Cretaceous period. The results indicate that the Indian subcontinent remained contiguous during this time.

Short duration of Early Permian Qiangtang-Panjal large igneous province: Implications for origin of the Neo-Tethys Ocean

Wei Dan et al.

Summary: The northward drift of the Cimmerian microcontinents and the opening of the Neo-Tethys Ocean in the Early Permian were accompanied by the emplacement of the Qiangtang-Panjal large igneous province (QP-LIP). New age data suggest that the duration of QP-LIP emplacement was shorter than previously believed, possibly due to the arrival of a mantle plume and slab pull leading to the northward drifting of terranes from northern Gondwana.

North China block underwent simultaneous true polar wander and tectonic convergence in late Jurassic: New paleomagnetic constraints

Yangjun Gao et al.

Summary: The study identified the paleogeographic changes in the North China Block during the Jurassic period, attributing them to true polar wander and plate tectonic components. It also estimated the northward plate moving velocity for the North China Block, and suggested that it accreted to Eurasia around 140 Ma. Additionally, the accumulation of subducted slabs at high paleolatitudes may have contributed to the Jurassic true polar wander.

The missing upper Carboniferous in the Cimmerian continent: A critical review

Xiang-dong Wang et al.

Summary: The Cimmerian continent is made up of blocks that were attached to Gondwana in different time periods, developing glacial sediments during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age. These blocks present a combination of warm and cool water sediments, lacking upper Carboniferous sediments and showing similarities to Australia and India/Pakistan. Additionally, they are characterized by the absence of upper Carboniferous sediments, making them significantly different from South China and other Tethyan regions.
