Sensitivities of Cross-Tropopause Transport in Midlatitude Overshooting Convection to the Lower Stratosphere Environment

Andrea E. Gordon et al.

Summary: This study evaluates how transport driven by tropopause-overshooting convection and properties of above-anvil cirrus plumes (AACPs) are modified by variations in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) environments. The research finds that storms with AACPs have greater troposphere-to-stratosphere transport (TST) and stratospheric hydration, while storms without AACPs have greater stratosphere-to-troposphere transport (STT). These findings suggest that the development of AACPs and UTLS transport are influenced by the stability and wind environment in the UTLS.

Infrequent, Rapid Transport Pathways to the Summer North American Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere

Xinyue Wang et al.

Summary: Efficient pathways connecting surface air to the North American upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (NA UTLS) are important for understanding the transport of short-lived tropospheric chemical species into the lower stratosphere. Fast transport pathways into the NA UTLS region can occur in a small fraction of cases with modal age <20 days, mainly due to enhanced deep convection over the eastern Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico.

A 13-year Trajectory-Based Analysis of Convection-Driven Changes in Upper Troposphere Lower Stratosphere Composition Over the United States

Summary: Moist convection has a significant impact on the distribution and concentration of trace gases in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. It typically increases humidity, reduces ozone concentration, and increases carbon monoxide levels. The effects of convection are more pronounced in tropical environments, particularly on ozone levels.

Identifying Outflow Regions of North American Monsoon Anticyclone-Mediated Meridional Transport of Convectively Influenced Air Masses in the Lower Stratosphere

C. E. Clapp et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of the North American monsoon anticyclone (NAMA) on the meridional transport of summertime cross-tropopause convective outflow. It found that the majority of CIAMs shifted their outflow from the southeastern region to the northeastern and southwestern regions, leading to a change in the average meridional displacement of CIAMs and potentially impacting global stratospheric composition.

Summary: The study examines the connection between North American monsoon anticyclone and precipitation, revealing the impact of precipitation on NAMA. The results show correlations between precipitation, atmospheric circulation anomalies, and temperatures, consistent with established theories.
