Risk factors for hospital-acquired pneumonia among inpatients with mental disorders in a large mental health center within a tertiary general hospital

Jingjing Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and risk factors of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) among inpatients with mental disorders in a general hospital. The study found that HAP was common among patients with mental disorders and was associated with hypoproteinemia, chronic liver disease, low body mass index, use of clozapine, cholinesterase inhibitors, and mood stabilizers.

IL-6 and other biomarkers as predictors of severity in COVID-19

N. Broman et al.

Summary: IL-6 and CRP were found to be the strongest predictors of severity in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, showing significantly higher levels in patients eventually admitted to the ICU. No statistical differences were found in median levels of lymphocytes, D-dimer, or ferritin between the groups.

Cytokines changes associated with electroconvulsive therapy in patients with treatment-resistant depression: a Meta-analysis

F. Gay et al.

Summary: One third of depressive patients may be treatment resistant, with ECT being effective for 70 to 90% of such cases. Resistant depression is associated with dysregulation of the immune system, potentially involving imbalances in pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Further research is needed to fully understand the impact of ECT on peripheral cytokines.

Influencing Factors of Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia Infection in the Middle-Aged and Elderly Patients With Schizophrenia

Mi Yang et al.

Summary: Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in hospitalized middle-aged and elderly patients with schizophrenia is associated with older age, male gender, and longer hospitalization duration. Specific antipsychotic drugs such as quetiapine, clozapine, and olanzapine, as well as combination with aceglutamide, are risk factors for HAP infection. Minimizing the types and dosages of antipsychotic drugs while monitoring mental symptoms is important in preventing HAP in this population.

Antipsychotic Polypharmacy for the Management of Schizophrenia: Evidence and Recommendations

Markku Lahteenvuo et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia is a challenging disorder to treat, with a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions necessary for effective management. While monotherapy with antipsychotics is not always successful, polypharmacy can be considered for patients who do not respond adequately to single-drug treatment, although it may come with increased risk of side effects. Additional research is needed to determine optimal polypharmacy approaches and other treatment augmentation strategies for specific patient populations and circumstances.

Antipsychotic polypharmacy in adult patients diagnosed with schizophrenia: A retrospective study

Bogdan Patrichi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of antipsychotic polypharmacy (APP) in patients with schizophrenia in the department, finding that prolonged hospitalization was an independent predictor of APP, and the combination including clozapine was the most commonly used in the APP group.
