Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin as a prognostic biomarker of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome

Eunjeong Son et al.

Summary: NGAL levels are elevated in ARDS patients and are associated with survival rates and ICU mortality. Serum and BAL levels of NGAL have good predictive value for ICU mortality in ARDS patients.

Summary: This study found that urine NGAL levels are associated with the worsening status of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and major adverse limb events (MALE), indicating the potential of urine NGAL for risk-stratification of PAD patients.

Predictive Value of Elevated Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) Levels for Assessment of Cardio-Renal Interactions among ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Patients

David Zahler et al.

Summary: Elevated NGAL levels have prognostic utility for renal and clinical outcomes among STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI, independent of traditional inflammatory markers. High NGAL is associated with increased short-term adverse outcomes, such as acute kidney injury, lower left ventricular ejection fraction, higher 30-day mortality, and higher incidence of MACE.

Lipocalin-2 does not influence EAE clinical score but it increases inflammation in central nervous system

Sofia P. das Neves et al.

Summary: The contribution of lipocalin-2 (LCN2) to multiple sclerosis (MS) remains controversial. In this study, we induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in LCN2-null and wild-type mice, and found that LCN2-null EAE mice had decreased expression of interferon gamma and less demyelination in the cerebellum. Both genotypes showed similar alterations in thymocyte and splenocyte populations. In MS patients, higher levels of LCN2 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) at diagnosis may be associated with faster disease progression, but further studies are needed to confirm this, as the association disappeared after controlling for other factors.

Relationship between Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin, Eosinophil Cationic Protein, Cytokines, and Atopic Sensitization in Patients with Allergic Diseases

Jong Weon Choi et al.

Summary: The effect of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) on eosinophil activation, atopic sensitization, and systemic inflammation in allergic diseases has rarely been investigated. This study found that NGAL may be more closely linked to allergic inflammation and possible fibrotic changes in the airways rather than the severity of eosinophil activation and atopic sensitization.

Lower ATG7 Levels are Associated with a Higher Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Cross-Sectional Study

Ling Lu et al.

Summary: This study found that ATG7 levels are significantly lower in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) compared to those without GDM, and lower ATG7 levels are associated with a higher risk of GDM. ATG7 levels are also negatively associated with insulin resistance. Autophagy deficiency, caused by lower ATG7 levels, may play a role in mediating insulin resistance in the development of GDM.

Lipocalin-2: Structure, function, distribution and role in metabolic disorders

Saeeda Al Jaberi et al.

Summary: Lipocalin-2 (LCN-2) is a circulating protein responsible for transporting small molecules to target organs, and has been used as a biomarker for renal injury. It has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and cell protection functions, and is associated with metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. The precise role of LCN-2 in metabolic pathways is still unclear.

Summary: Compared to the Control group, mice in the GDM group showed continuous increase in FBG levels and significant decrease in FINS levels. Apelin-13 treatment in GDM mice significantly improved glucose and lipid metabolism, reduced oxidative stress and inflammatory reaction, and protected pancreatic islets. The improvement was reversed by LY294002 treatment.

Summary: The study tested the hypothesis that maternal lipid metabolism is modulated during normal pregnancy and altered in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) using a mouse model of diet-induced obesity and a novel lipid analysis tool. The results showed differences in lipid metabolism between healthy pregnancies and those with GDM, suggesting that lipid metabolism plays a role in glucose tolerance and the development of GDM.

Increased lipocalin 2 levels in adolescents with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Junji Takaya et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between bone and glucose metabolism in adolescents with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results showed higher LCN2 levels in patients with DM2 but not in those with obesity. Serum LCN2 was positively correlated with the Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance score and body mass index, and negatively correlated with adiponectin. Further investigations are warranted to determine whether LCN2 may act as a sensitive indicator of early-stage insulin resistance.
