Differences in growth patterns and catch-up growth of small for gestational age preterm infants fed on fortified mother's own milk v. preterm formula

Lilach Hofi et al.

Summary: Fortified mother's own milk (MOM) feeding is more beneficial for growth-restricted preterm infants compared to preterm formula (PF) feeding. MOM-fed infants showed greater decrease in weight and length z-scores between birth and discharge, and smaller increase in head circumference z-score. However, at 2-year corrected age, MOM-fed infants had slower increase in height z-score and only 40% achieved catch-up height. Extra nutritional support is needed for growth-restricted preterm infants fed fortified MOM in the first 2 years of life.

Growth patterns and breast milk/infant formula energetic efficiency in healthy infants up to 18 months of life: the COGNIS study

Natalia Sepulveda-Valbuena et al.

Summary: Feeding type during early life can impact growth and metabolic risks later in life. This study compared the effects of different types of feeding on growth patterns and energetic efficiency in infants up to 18 months old. Breastfeeding may have positive effects on growth programming due to its nutrients' energetic efficiency compared to formula feeding.

Role of Human Milk Bioactives on Infants' Gut and Immune Health

Laura E. Carr et al.

Summary: Exclusive human milk feeding for the first 6 months is vital for optimal health outcomes in newborns, while adding HMOs to infant formula could enhance defense mechanisms. Current research has shown important knowledge about HMOs, milk microbiota, immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, and milk miRNAs, but there are still gaps in understanding the roles and interactions of different milk components.

Factors Associated with Catch-up Growth in Term, Asymmetrical Small-for-Gestational Age Infants in the First Year of Life

Sundar Sivakumar et al.

Summary: Exclusive breastfeeding for more than 4 months, continued breastfeeding until 12-15 months, and absence of diarrhea episodes were positively associated with catch-up growth in term SGA infants. Pregnancy-induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, and maternal overweight/obesity were negatively associated with catch-up growth. Breastfeeding practice, especially continued breastfeeding, and the absence of diarrheal illness were identified as key determinants for achieving catch-up growth weight in term SGA infants in resource-limited settings.

Summary: This study investigated the cardiometabolic profile of children born small for gestational age (SGA) and found that exclusive breastfeeding may provide protection for these children until preschool age, reducing the risk of chronic non-communicable diseases.
