Mortality rate of end-stage kidney disease patients in Taiwan

Bo-Sheng Wu et al.

Summary: This study used the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan to analyze changes in mortality and international survival rates of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients. It found that the mortality rate decreased in young patients and the ESKD population aged, and that patients who participated in the pre-ESRD care program had a higher post-dialysis initiation life expectancy. These findings suggest improved care quality in Taiwan for ESKD patients.

Surgery for Renal Hyperparathyroidism in the Era of Cinacalcet: A Single-Center Experience

M. T. Mogl et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of parathyroidectomy in patients with renal hyperparathyroidism, specifically looking at the influence of cinacalcet. The findings showed that cinacalcet did not impact the surgical outcomes and could be safely offered to patients who did not respond to medical treatment. Additionally, patients receiving cinacalcet had lower preoperative calcium levels, but there were no significant differences in other clinical parameters or complications compared to patients not on cinacalcet.

Surgical Management of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism

Gabrielle K. Steinl et al.

Summary: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is common in patients with chronic kidney disease, and those who fail medical treatment should be referred to a parathyroid surgeon. Surgical indications, preoperative planning, intraoperative strategies, and postoperative management are crucial.

Epidemiology of end-stage kidney disease

Ryan Gupta et al.

Summary: End-stage kidney disease is a common and severe condition that significantly impacts quality of life and requires treatment through dialysis or transplantation. However, treatment outcomes vary among different patient populations, particularly affecting Black and Hispanic patients. Future priorities for ESKD care include increasing access to care for underprivileged populations, providing patient-centered care, and focusing on team-based care approaches.

Impact of National Economy and Policies on End-Stage Kidney Care in South Asia and Southeast Asia

Suceena Alexander et al.

Summary: The study found that in South Asia and Southeast Asia countries, the incidence and prevalence of kidney disease are higher in higher economy countries, with hemodialysis being the main treatment method. However, in lower economy countries, out-of-pocket expenses are higher, and there is a lack of dialysis facilities and manpower.
