Whole-Genome Resequencing of Worldwide Wild and Domestic Sheep Elucidates Genetic Diversity, Introgression, and Agronomically Important Loci

Feng-Hua Lv et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive genome resource for domestic sheep, wild ovine species, and local breeds, discovering numerous novel genetic variants and investigating their frequency differences between wild and domestic populations. The study also identifies selection targets related to morphological and agronomic traits and uncovers a potential causal variant for fleece fiber diameter. Additionally, the study reconstructs prehistoric migrations from the Near East to South and Southeast Asia.

The effect of inbreeding on the growth ability of meat sheep breeds in the Czech Republic

Michaela Cerna et al.

Summary: This study presented the trend of inbreeding and estimated the effect of inbreeding on the growth ability of lambs in the three most common sire breeds in the Czech Republic. The results showed a significant negative effect of inbreeding on the growth ability of lambs, with regression coefficients estimating the weight of lambs for a change of 1% in inbreeding for each breed.

Resilience in Retrospective: The Trajectory of Agro-Pastoral Systems in the Centro Region of Portugal

Isabel Dinis et al.

Summary: Agro-pastoral systems in southern European regions have been facing various disturbances in the past few decades, but have shown resilience. The case study of Serra da Estrela cheese production in the Portuguese Centro Region illustrates the challenges of adapting to internal and external changes and transitioning into a new trajectory.

Estimates of genomic inbreeding and identification of candidate regions that differ between Chinese indigenous sheep breeds

Jiaxin Liu et al.

Summary: By analyzing ROH in five Chinese indigenous sheep breeds, we observed different ROH patterns and genetic characteristics among the breeds. Large-tailed Han sheep exhibited the highest level of genomic inbreeding, while candidate genes within ROH islands could be used to illustrate the genetic characteristics of these sheep breeds.

Characterization of dairy sheep farms in the Serra da Estrela PDO region

Antonio Monteiro et al.

Summary: This study investigates sheep farms producing certified milk in the Serra da Estrela region of Portugal. Results show that the producers are mostly male with an average age of around 51 years, and the average daily milk production per animal ranges from 0.47 to 1.0 L. The average price of milk paid to the producer is 1.25 Euros/L.

OptM: estimating the optimal number of migration edges on population trees using Treemix

Robert R. Fitak

Summary: The study shows that inferring the optimal number of migration events in population trees can be achieved by examining the second-order rate of change in likelihood (Δm), which performs equally well as current recommendations for Treemix. This method may be preferable in large, complex population histories.
