Increased mitochondrial proline metabolism sustains proliferation and survival of colorectal cancer cells

Saif Sattar Alaqbi et al.

Summary: Research on the metabolism of non-essential amino acid proline in cancer has gained attention. The expression levels of proline biosynthesis enzymes are significantly increased during colorectal tumorigenesis. The expression of mitochondrial PYCR enzymes is crucial for cancer cells' survival and proliferation.

MicroRNA-148a/152 cluster restrains tumor stem cell phenotype of colon cancer via modulating CCT6A

Xin Peng et al.

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that miR-148a/152 acts as a tumor inhibitor in various cancers. In this study, the researchers investigated the inhibitory effect of miR-148a/152 cluster on colon cancer stem cells through regulation of CCT6A. They found that upregulated miR-148a/152 suppressed the invasion and migration ability, colony formation, and proliferation of CD44(+)/CD133(+) colon cancer stem cells, induced cell apoptosis, and decreased tumor weight and volume. The researchers also identified CCT6A as a target gene of miR-148a/152.

Independent Component Analysis Identifies the Modulons Expanding the Transcriptional Regulatory Networks of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli

Hanhyeok Im et al.

Summary: The transcriptional regulatory networks (TRNs) of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) were analyzed using independent component analysis (ICA), which decomposed the target genes into several modulons. Further investigation revealed novel members of the Ler regulon and the regulatory relationship between thiamine and copper ions with the Stx prophage genes. The activity changes in these modulons successfully explained the differential expressions of the virulence and survival genes during infection.

Summary: This study conducted a multi-omics analysis to investigate the expression and potential roles of matrix metalloproteinases in colorectal cancer. The findings suggest that MMPs could be targeted in colon cancer treatment and serve as novel biomarkers, especially for their involvement in the immune response. Further research is needed to explore the detailed biological functions and molecular mechanisms of MMPs in CRC, considering their expression and regulation in different tissues.
