LDL Apheresis and Lp (a) Apheresis: A Clinician's Perspective

Meral Kayikcioglu

Summary: Lipoprotein apheresis is the most effective means of lipid-lowering therapy, but it is also associated with various challenges such as ineffective treatment outcomes, low adherence rates, and negative impact on quality of life. Awareness among physicians is still low, and there is a need for further research and education in this area.

Existing and emerging therapies for the treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia

Robert S. Rosenson

Summary: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder of LDL metabolism characterized by elevated LDL-cholesterol, with current cholesterol-lowering therapies often ineffective, particularly in patients with homozygous FH (HoFH). Achieving the treatment goals for LDL-cholesterol remains a challenge in patients with FH.

Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC)

Antonio J. Vallejo-Vaz et al.

Summary: This study characterized the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia using data from the FHSC global registry, highlighting the challenges in prevention and management of the condition. Early detection and greater use of combination therapies are needed to reduce the global burden of familial hypercholesterolaemia.

Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Global Burden and Approaches

Lale Tokgozoglu et al.

Summary: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder characterized by markedly elevated LDL-C levels from birth onward, resulting in significantly increased risk for ASCVD. Despite major advances in our understanding of the disease and effective therapies, FH is still underdiagnosed and undertreated. Early initiation of LDL-C lowering by increased awareness of FH among healthcare professionals, patients, and the public is necessary to achieve meaningful reduction in ASCVD morbidity and mortality in these patients.
