Evaluating preservation bias in the continental growth record against the monazite archive

Jacob A. Mulder et al.

Summary: This study analyzes a global compilation of monazite ages and finds a strong correlation with zircon ages, further supporting the link between collisional orogenesis and the preserved record of continental growth. The findings also suggest that the continental crust provides a preservational, rather than generational, archive of crustal growth.

From microanalysis to supercontinents: Insights from the Rio Apa Terrane into the Mesoproterozoic SW Amazonian Craton evolution during Rodinia assembly

Bruno Ribeiro et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of four tectono-metamorphic events in the Rio Apa Terrane, occurring at approximately 1,780, 1,625, 1,420-1,340, and 1,300-1,200 Ma. These events indicate a progressive high-pressure/medium-temperature metamorphic sequence, along with collisions and accretions with adjacent terranes at different time periods.

Strain Partitioning along Terrane Bounding and Intraterrane Shear Zones: Constraints from a Long-Lived Transpressional System in West Gondwana (Ribeira Belt, Brazil)

F. M. Faleiros et al.

Summary: In this study, a multiscale approach was used to investigate the shear zone system in the Ribeira Belt, Southeast Brazil. The findings reveal different deformation regimes and metamorphic conditions along the shear zones, as well as intermittent activities over time. The spatial and temporal record of these shear zones is crucial for understanding the assembly and tectonic evolution of the Ribeira Belt.

Understanding ancient tectonic settings through detrital zircon analysis

M. Barham et al.

Summary: The fertility and heterogeneity of source rocks are important factors in determining the age distribution of detrital zircon populations in sedimentary basins. Two newly defined metrics provide a powerful means of distinguishing between geologically active convergent systems and divergent/passive margin basins. This approach has the potential to refine views of basin evolution and investigate tectonic settings.

Spatial variation in provenance signal: identifying complex sand sourcing within a Carboniferous basin using multiproxy provenance analysis

B. Anders et al.

Summary: Multiple factors influence the volume and composition of sediment delivered to basins, leading to variations in source signals and provenance. A bespoke multi-proxy provenance approach allows for assessment of natural biasing and intra-basinal spatial variations. The sediment routed to basins through complex drainage systems rather than from single large interconnected sedimentary systems.

Multi-proxy evidence for subduction of the Neoproterozoic Adamastor Ocean and Wilson cycle tectonics in the South Atlantic Brasiliano Orogenic System of Western Gondwana

Fabricio A. Caxito et al.

Summary: By analyzing data from various fields, it has been concluded that the South Atlantic Brasiliano Orogenic System went through a Wilson cycle involving different stages such as rift, drift, subduction, collision, and collapse. The evidence from petrographic, isotopic, and geophysical data reveals the complex evolution of the South Atlantic Brasiliano Orogenic System with distinct components of the Wilson cycle.

Reduce or recycle? Revealing source to sink links through integrated zircon-feldspar provenance fingerprinting

Milo Barham et al.

Summary: By integrating information from zircon and feldspar provenance, a sediment recycling metric 'R' is proposed and applied to clastic samples in northeast Greenland. The study found that detrital zircon populations are dominated by Palaeoproterozoic grains, while feldspar grain Pb-isotope ratios correspond mainly to Caledonian granites. The decoupling of zircon and feldspar provenance proxies is attributed to limited zircon growth within Caledonian granites and significant upgrading of recycled zircon components.

Provenance and tectonic evolution of the Andrela○ndia Group in the region between the Socorro and Guaxup´e nappes, Southern Brasilia and Ribeira orogens, Brazil

Marcos V. F. Fontainha et al.

Summary: Two metasedimentary successions, the Itapira Group and Andrela circle ndia Group, located in the southwestern part of the Southern Brasilia Orogen, were deformed and metamorphosed between 630 and 600 Ma under amphibolite to granulite facies conditions. These rock sequences, composed of different types of rocks, show an unconformable and tectonic contact with orthoderived basement rocks of the Sa & tilde;o Francisco paleocontinent, indicating they belong to the Andrela circle ndia Group and Itapira Complex.

Integrated detrital rutile and zircon provenance reveals multiple sources for Cambrian sandstones in North Gondwana

Yousef Zoleikhaei et al.

Summary: By analyzing the detrital zircon and rutile from the early Paleozoic Lalun Formation in Iran, it was found that most of the detrital sediments originated from the Neoproterozoic age, and the Arabian-Nubian Shield may be a more suitable source for the formation. This study reveals a complex pattern of sediment dispersal along the northern margin of Gondwana and challenges the idea of a well-mixed, far-travelled sand sheet.

Extending full-plate tectonic models into deep time: Linking the Neoproterozoic and the Phanerozoic

Andrew S. Merdith et al.

Summary: Recent progress in plate tectonic reconstructions has expanded beyond continental drift to reconstruct the full evolving configuration of tectonic plates and plate boundaries. A continuous full-plate model spanning 1 billion years to present-day has been developed, incorporating a revised model for the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian period and connecting it with models of the Phanerozoic. The model is geologically constrained and based on preserved data from past plate boundaries, with the goal of providing a detailed and self-consistent tectonic reconstruction for the last billion years of Earth's history.

Summary: New geological and LA-ICP-MS U-Pb geochronological data were used to study tectonic events in the Nova Brasilandia belt in the southwestern Amazonian Craton, revealing two orogenic phases from approximately 1137 to 1010 Ma: an accretionary phase and an overprinted metamorphism phase.

Detrital rutile tracks the first appearance of subduction zone low T/P paired metamorphism in the Palaeoproterozoic

Ines Pereira et al.

Summary: Earth is unique within the Solar System with its active plate tectonic regime. The timing of the development of plate tectonics on Earth is still debated, with some evidence suggesting it could have been operational as early as the Archaean. By examining detrital rock records and using rutile as a proxy for tracking low T/P metamorphism, researchers have been able to trace the occurrence of different metamorphic conditions through geological time. The study confirms that low T/P metamorphism has been operating on Earth since at least the late Palaeoproterozoic.

Summary: Recent studies on the Embu Complex in southeast Brazil have revealed that a high-grade metamorphic event occurred between 810-760 Ma, coinciding with recorded igneous activity during that period. Additionally, ages obtained from various minerals indicate a slow cooling process between 675-550 Ma, accompanied by the development of late stage shear zones.
