Expression profiles of antimicrobial peptides in Mytilus coruscus

Jinyue Yang et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides play a crucial role in mussels' innate immunity, with M. coruscus containing a diverse range of AMPs. Expression of AMPs varies in different tissues, larval stages, and individuals of M. coruscus, with gonads and hemocytes as the main sources for adult mussels in different seasons. Differential AMP response patterns were observed under microbial challenges, with rapid and strong responses to gram-positive bacteria, weak responses to gram-negative bacteria, and long-term responses to fungus. LC-MS/MS analysis confirmed the presence of multiple AMP families in mussel serum.

Exceptionally high mortality of adult female salmon: a large-scale pattern and a conservation concern

Scott G. Hinch et al.

Summary: Research has shown a decline in the proportion of female sockeye salmon on spawning grounds in several British Columbia populations over the past 30 years. Most studies indicate that female mortality is 2.1 times higher than that of males, with some cases showing up to an eightfold difference. This phenomenon is also evident in other sockeye salmon populations, as well as in coho and Chinook salmon.

The intersection of stress, sex and immunity in fishes

James H. Campbell et al.

Summary: Sexual dimorphism in immune responses in fish is influenced by factors such as stress, sex hormones, and spawning. Female fish are generally considered more robust than males, but maternal stress in aquaculture can compromise the immune response of offspring.

Considering Sex as a Biological Variable in Basic and Clinical Studies: An Endocrine Society Scientific Statement

Aditi Bhargava et al.

Summary: The NIH announced in 2014 that applicants for research funding must consider sex as a biological variable. Despite efforts to include both sexes in research plans, confusion remains among researchers and reviewers about sex differences. Gender and sex are often used interchangeably, and the gender of the researcher may impact the outcomes of studies, particularly in behavioral research.

Pomc Plays an Important Role in Sexual Size Dimorphism in Tilapia

Z. Y. Wan et al.

Summary: Sexual dimorphism is common in the animal kingdom, with mechanisms of sexual size dimorphism being limitedly understood. Tilapia, a type of cichlid fish, has been studied to understand the differences in gene expression between males and females in the brain, particularly focusing on the Pomc gene and its relation to growth and feeding behavior in zebrafish. Results suggest that Pomc contributes to sexual size dimorphism, with high estrogen levels in females promoting its expression and suppressing feeding, leading to slower growth in female tilapias.
