Electrode material promoted dehydrogenative homo-/cross-coupling of weakly activated naphthalenes

Siyuan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, an electrochemical dehydrogenative homo-/cross-coupling reaction of weakly activated naphthalene was developed without the involvement of exogenous transition metals and oxidants. The electropolymerization of aromatic rings was suppressed due to the interaction between the reactants and the carbon plate anode. A series of binaphthyl and naphthalene-aryl privileged scaffolds were obtained in yields of 28%-90% through homo- or cross-coupling. This C(sp2)-H activation strategy offers atom and step economy, and can be easily scaled up.

Electrochemistry enabled selective vicinal fluorosulfenylation and fluorosulfoxidation of alkenes

Yi Yu et al.

Summary: Both sulfur and fluorine play crucial roles in organic synthesis, the life science, and materials science. This study presents a highly selective electrochemical vicinal fluorosulfenylation and fluorosulfoxidation reactions of alkenes, made possible by the precise control of electrode potential. Preliminary mechanistic investigations reveal that the fluorosulfenylation reaction proceeds through a radical-polar crossover mechanism involving an episulfonium ion intermediate. Subsequent electrochemical oxidation easily converts fluorosulfides to fluorosulfoxides under higher applied potential in the presence of adventitious H2O.
