Orbital analysis of bonding in diarylhalonium salts and relevance to periodic trends in structure and reactivity

Shubhendu S. Karandikar et al.

Summary: Diarylhalonium compounds play important roles as reagents and catalysts in organic synthesis, with the key reactivity of the three center, four electron bond requiring refinement for broader applicability. The combination of Density Functional Theory, Natural Bond Orbital Theory, and X-ray structure data can provide insights into the bonding and structure of these compounds.

Decarbonylative/decarboxylative [4+2] annulation of phthalic anhydrides and cyclic iodoniums towards triphenylenes

Lingyu Huang et al.

Summary: A palladium-catalyzed decarbonylative/decarboxylative [4 + 2] annulation of phthalic anhydrides with cyclic diaryliodonium salts to synthesize triphenylenes has been developed. The reaction shows broad substrate scope with a high yield of up to 99%, and it provides an efficient and fast way to access functionalized triphenylenes in only one hour.

Cyclic Diaryl λ3-Bromanes: A Rapid Access to Molecular Complexity via Cycloaddition Reactions

Matteo Lanzi et al.

Summary: This study reported the synthesis of dissymetric 2,3,2',3',4-substituted biaryls via pericyclic reactions of cyclic diaryl lambda(3)-bromanes. The method provides functional group tolerance and atom economy, allowing access to molecular complexity in a single reaction step. Continuous flow protocol has been designed for scale-up, while postfunctionalizations have been developed leveraging the residual Br-atom.

Cyclic Diaryl λ3-Bromanes as Original Aryne Precursors

Matteo Lanzi et al.

Summary: A general, safe, and high-yielding strategy to access cyclic diaryl lambda(3)-bromanes is reported in this study, featuring reactivity complementary to that of lambda(3)-iodanes to generate arynes under mild reaction conditions in the presence of a weak base. Mechanistic studies unambiguously support the aryne generation mechanism.

Electrochemical Generation of Hypervalent Bromine(III) Compounds

Igors Sokolovs et al.

Summary: In contrast to hypervalent iodine(III) compounds, little research has been done on isoelectronic bromine(III) compounds. A new method for preparing chelation-stabilized lambda(3)-bromanes was presented in this study, demonstrating their synthetic utility in oxidative reactions. The reactivity of stable bromine(III) species can be unlocked by the addition of a Lewis or a Bronsted acid, leading to the formation of C-C, C-N, and C-O bonds.
