Catalyst-Free Intermolecular Sulfonyl/Fluoromethyl Heteroarylation of Vinyl Ethers via Visible-Light-Induced Charge Transfer

Tianyu Long et al.

Summary: We report a visible-light-induced three-component sulfonyl-heteroarylation of vinyl ethers with sulfinates and five-membered heteroaryl chlorides. This protocol provides efficient synthesis of beta-sulfonyl alkyl five-membered heteroarenes under mild and catalyst-free conditions. Additionally, the use of CF3SO2Na or CF2HSO2Na as coupling partners enables the three-component fluoromethyl-arylation of vinyl ethers, leading to the formation of valuable CF3/CF2H-incorporated alkyl heterocycles under mild conditions.

Identification of a Self-Photosensitizing Hydrogen Atom Transfer Organocatalyst System

Hiromu Fuse et al.

Summary: In this study, we developed an organocatalyst system that can promote the cleavage of stable C-H bonds through a hydrogen atom transfer process without the use of exogenous photosensitizers. The electronically tuned thiophosphoric acid, 7,7'-OMe-TPA, was assembled with substrate or co-catalyst N-heteroaromatics to form electron donor-acceptor complexes. Photoirradiation of these complexes induced stepwise single-electron transfer processes to generate a HAT-active thiyl radical. Spectroscopic studies and theoretical calculations characterized the stepwise SET process mediated by short-lived intermediates. This organocatalytic HAT system showed high functional group tolerance in four different C-H functionalization reactions.

A novel and unexpected one pot synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinolines

Geraud N. Sansom et al.

Summary: A new low temperature route for synthesizing pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinolines bearing ester groups at the 5-position is reported. The reaction mechanism depends on the reaction temperature, where at low temperatures, the reaction proceeds through an addition-intramolecular SNAr-elimination pathway. This method is advantageous as it avoids high boiling point solvents and is compatible with thermosensitive substrates.

Summary: In this study, a simple, open-air, and efficient light-mediated Minisci C-H alkylation method is described, which is based on the formation of an electron donor-acceptor complex. Unlike previous protocols, this method does not require a photocatalyst, single electron transfer agent, or oxidant additive. The reaction can proceed under mildly acidic and open-air conditions, and it yields moderate to good amounts of Minisci alkylation products.
