Reassessment of the Proteomic Composition and Function of Extracellular Vesicles in the Seminal Plasma

Hanshu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the composition and function of extracellular vesicles (EVs) and nonvesicular extracellular matter (NV) in seminal plasma. The researchers found that the seminal EVs could be divided into three subtypes based on density, and EVs and NV had different characteristics in terms of size, shape, and expression of exosome markers. The high-density EVs and NV were found to significantly enhance sperm motility and capacitation, while only the NV fraction induced sperm acrosome reaction. Proteomic analysis revealed that the different subtypes of EVs and NV had distinct protein components and were involved in different physiological functions.

Lycopene Supplementation to Serum-Free Maturation Medium Improves In Vitro Bovine Embryo Development and Quality and Modulates Embryonic Transcriptomic Profile

Shehu Sidi et al.

Summary: Lycopene supplementation in atmospheric oxygen conditions during in vitro maturation of bovine oocytes has antioxidant effects, reducing oxidative stress and improving embryo development and quality. Transcriptomic analysis revealed differentially expressed genes associated with cellular function, metabolism, DNA repair, and anti-apoptosis, indicating the modulation of key pathways by lycopene.

Oviduct as a sensor of embryo quality: deciphering the extracellular vesicle (EV)-mediated embryo-maternal dialogue

Keerthie Dissanayake et al.

Summary: The study found that embryo-derived extracellular vesicles can alter the gene expression of bovine oviductal epithelial cells and that this effect is dependent on the quality of the embryo. Extracellular vesicles from good quality embryos significantly regulated the expression of specific genes in epithelial cells.

Changes in Oviductal Cells and Small Extracellular Vesicles miRNAs in Pregnant Cows

Rosane Mazzarella et al.

Summary: Our study found that in pregnant cows, certain miRNAs were up-regulated in OF-sEVs, indicating a potential communication between the embryo and the mother. Conversely, in OECs from non-pregnant cows, several miRNAs were up-regulated, suggesting a difference in miRNA modulation based on pregnancy status. This highlights the importance of miRNA regulation in OECs and sEVs during early embryonic development in the oviduct.

Bovine Follicular Fluid Derived Extracellular Vesicles Modulate the Viability, Capacitation and Acrosome Reaction of Bull Spermatozoa

Mohammad Mehedi Hasan et al.

Summary: Before the union of an egg and spermatozoon, multiple vital processes occur in the female reproductive system. The maturation of spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract is crucial for fertilization. Follicular fluid (FF) and its extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a significant role in supporting sperm functions, with specific effects based on species and source of FF EVs. This study demonstrates that bovine FF EVs can support sperm function and contribute to a favorable periconceptional microenvironment.

Critical Review of the Evolution of Extracellular Vesicles' Knowledge: From 1946 to Today

Erica Bazzan et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a family of particles/vesicles found in blood and body fluids, playing important roles in cell communication and regulation of cell processes. Recent years have seen increased interest in the content and function of EVs, but this has also led to confusion in their classification and naming. This review analyzes the evolution of knowledge and definition of EVs over the years.

Trophoblast derived extracellular vesicles specifically alter the transcriptome of endometrial cells and may constitute a critical component of embryo-maternal communication

Kasun Godakumara et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that trophoblast-derived EVs have the capability to modify the gene expression of endometrial cells, particularly in the aspects of extracellular matrix remodeling and G protein-coupled receptors signaling. These alterations may play a significant role in embryo-maternal communication during implantation.
