Summary: This study presents a novel approach to estimate the proportional distributions of function types in an urban area by learning semantics preserved embeddings of points-of-interest (POIs). The proposed approach utilizes spatially explicit random walks to learn spatial co-occurrence patterns and a manifold learning algorithm to capture categorical semantics. The results of a case study in Xiamen Island, China demonstrate that the approach outperforms competitive baseline models and shows high consistency with the ground truth. Additionally, an error analysis reveals intrinsic limitations of POI data for this task, such as ambiguous linkage between POIs and functions.

Summary: This study found that poverty in East Java in 2020 is represented by variables such as night-time light intensity (NTL), built-up index (BUI), sulfur dioxide (SO2), point-of-interest (POI) density, and POI distance. By establishing a relative spatial poverty index (RSPI), poverty distribution at 1.5 km x 1.5 km grids can be indicated. Evaluation of RSPI shows that areas with high scores are geographically deprived and sparsely populated with inadequate accessibility, while areas with low scores have better living conditions.

Summary: A location's irreplaceability refers to the degree of difficulty with which it can be replaced by other locations. Existing methods for quantifying an urban location's irreplaceability do not consider human activity at the location, therefore the revealed irreplaceability may deviate from the resident's perceptions. To address this issue, a flow-based locational measure, I-index, is proposed to quantify the location's irreplaceability by combining flow volume and length into a single value.

Summary: This article proposes a framework for modeling excess commuting based on open-source data of the ten most populous megacities in China. The study found that commuting distances and time of all ten megacities follow a left-skewed normal distribution, with spatial heterogeneity of commuting time being more significant than that of distance. Excess commuting measured by time is lower than that measured by distance for each city, and the impact of land use, waterbody distribution, and centripetal urbanization on urban commuting distance and time is significant.

Summary: A novel framework was proposed to quantify city-level dynamic functions of 200 cities in China using location-aware big data from social media. Results showed that urban functions of cities change dynamically from daybreak to evening, and cities can be grouped into two or four clusters based on their dominant functions.
