Accounting for space, time, and behavior using GPS derived dynamic measures of environmental exposure

Marta M. Jankowska et al.

Summary: Time-weighted spatial averaging approaches (TWSA) are increasingly used for calculating exposure using GPS mobility data. This study compares three TWSA methods (KDE, DR, and PO) and evaluates their sensitivity to different mobility data inputs, environmental data types, and participant clustering patterns. The study analyzes GPS and accelerometer data from 602 participants to derive time-weighted activity spaces and calculate exposure values using various TWSA approaches and environmental data layers. The findings provide insights into the similarities and differences in TWSA-derived exposures and offer recommendations for researchers using these methods in health-related studies.

Urban vitality and seniors' outdoor rest time in Barcelona

Zeynep S. Akinci et al.

Summary: Immobility and lack of physical activity are common problems among seniors. This study examines how urban vitality affects seniors' outdoor rest and finds that seniors in Barcelona tend to rest rather than being active in more vital areas, with variations among age and gender groups.

Urban green spaces for elderly human health: A planning model for healthy city living

Md Julfikar Ali et al.

Summary: Green space is essential for the health and social interactions of elderly people, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and promoting a sense of community. Making green space accessible to all can maximize its benefits. This paper discusses the necessity of elderly people visiting green space, its impact on physical and psychological health, and proposes a planning toolkit.

Is Local Public Transport unsuitable for elderly? Exploring the cases of two Italian cities

Ilaria Mariotti et al.

Summary: The psychological well-being of older people is closely related to their level of activity and social contacts, with participation in activities and outdoor mobility contributing to larger social networks, less loneliness, and higher life satisfaction. The living environment and public transport conditions of older adults are important factors affecting their perceived activity space, and policymakers need to pay attention to the mobility and health issues of the elderly.

Summary: This study examined the associations between environmental exposures and depressive symptoms in both residential and mobility environments, finding a significant negative relationship with green space exposure. Gender did not have a significant moderating effect on these associations. Dynamic approaches to exposure assessment in studies on the environment and mental health may be useful for further research.

Acute respiratory response to individual particle exposure (PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10) in the elderly with and without chronic respiratory diseases

Tianyi Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed that elderly individuals with chronic respiratory diseases are more sensitive to exposure to particles, showing changes in fractional exhaled nitric oxide and pulmonary function. Lower BMI, females, and non-allergic individuals are more responsive to particle exposure, while robust effects were not observed in subjects without chronic respiratory diseases.

Mobility-based environmental justice: Understanding housing disparity in real-time exposure to air pollution and momentary psychological stress in Beijing, China

Yinhua Tao et al.

Summary: The study in urban China found that residents of different types of housing were exposed to varying PM2.5 concentrations, with residents of public low-rent housing being the disadvantaged group due to their limited mobility, exposure to serious air pollution at home, and insensitive stress responses to air pollution. These findings uncover a mobility-based environmental justice issue and provide references for residential mix policy to narrow the disparity in environmental pollution exposure.

Transportation noise pollution and cardiovascular disease

Thomas Munzel et al.

Summary: Transportation noise pollution is recognized as a cardiovascular risk factor that can increase the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases, especially ischemic heart disease. Over 1.6 million healthy life-years are lost annually in Western Europe due to traffic-related noise, with night traffic noise causing sleep fragmentation and increased oxidative stress, contributing to cardiovascular risk. This review focuses on indirect cardiovascular health effects of transportation noise, discussing epidemiological evidence, mechanistic insights, and potential mitigation strategies.

Beyond air pollution at home: Assessment of personal exposure to PM2.5 using activity-based travel demand model and low-cost air sensor network data

Yougeng Lu

Summary: Ignoring human movement and spatiotemporal variability of air pollution can lead to differential exposure misclassification, potentially biasing health risk assessments. Workers' personal exposures were underestimated by 22% (5-61%) relative to their residence-based exposures, with those who commute >20 miles potentially experiencing the greatest underestimation of exposures. Omitting mobility resulted in underestimating exposures for residents in cleaner air areas working in more polluted areas, and overestimating exposures for residents in poorer air quality areas working in cleaner areas, creating important exposure and health disparities.
