Active RIS vs. Passive RIS: Which Will Prevail in 6G?

Zijian Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes the concept of active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to overcome the capacity limitation of passive RISs in strong direct link scenarios. By integrating amplifiers into the elements, active RISs can amplify the reflected signals. The signal model of active RISs is developed and verified through experimental measurements, and the significant capacity gain they provide for wireless communications is analyzed. A joint transmit beamforming and reflect precoding scheme is proposed to maximize the sum-rate in an active RIS aided multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) system. Simulation results show that active RISs can achieve a significant sum-rate gain of 130% in comparison to the limited 22% gain of passive RISs, thus overcoming the multiplicative fading effect.

1-Bit Wideband Reconfigurable Reflectarray Design in Ku-Band

Bin Xi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a 1-bit wideband electronically reconfigurable reflectarray in the Ku-band. By using a stacked microstrip structure and a 1-bit microstrip line-slot line-microstrip line phase shifter, the wideband and reconfigurable characteristics are achieved. The novel receiving-phase shift-transmitting unit cell is obtained by connecting two stacked microstrip structures, showing polarization rotation. Experimental results demonstrate that the reflectarray can achieve beam scanning.

A 10 240-Element Reconfigurable Reflectarray With Fast Steerable Monopulse Patterns

Xiaotian Pan et al.

Summary: A large-scale 1-bit reconfigurable reflectarray with fast steerable monopulse patterns has been designed and tested at X-band. The reflectarray element integrates one PIN diode to reconfigure the reflective phase, achieving high gain and relatively good aperture efficiency. By using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to control PIN diodes and applying digital beam forming methods, precise beam steering has been achieved within +/- 60 degrees azimuth range.

Wideband 1 bit Reconfigurable Transmitarray Antenna Based on Polarization Rotation Element

Chuan-Wei Luo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a broadband reconfigurable transmitarray antenna based on a polarization rotation element, which effectively broadens the operating bandwidth of the RTA by controlling the on and off states of p-i-n diodes to change the polarization orientation of the emitted wave. Experimental results show that a 16 x 16 elements RTA has good performance, including peak gain, aperture efficiency, and beam scanning range.
