Serum S100B correlates with health-related quality of life and functional outcome in patients at 1 year after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage

Helena Aineskog et al.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between protein S100B and blood clearance and health-related quality of life after 1 year of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Peak S100B can be used as a prognostic factor for predicting unfavorable outcome in aSAH.

Biomarkers for sepsis: more than just fever and leukocytosis-a narrative review

Tatiana Barichello et al.

Summary: A biomarker is a measurable indicator of a patient's clinical condition that can be measured accurately and reproducibly. In sepsis patients, there are various biomarkers such as PRMs, complement system, and cytokines. However, further research is needed to identify the optimal combinations of biomarkers.

Cerebral dysfunctions caused by sepsis during ageing

Tatsuya Manabe et al.

Summary: Sepsis-induced systemic inflammation can cause acute cerebral dysfunction known as sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE), which is common and shows dynamic changes over time. Factors contributing to the development and persistence of SAE in patients may include premorbid neurodegenerative pathology, side effects of sedatives, renal dysfunction, and latent virus reactivation. The mechanisms underlying neuropathology in SAE might also be relevant to delirium and cognitive impairments in severe COVID-19 patients.

Features of urine S100B and its ability to rule out intracranial hemorrhage in patients with head trauma: a prospective trial

Tomas Vedin et al.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally. This study found that urine S100B is not reliable for ruling out intracranial hemorrhage, and urine-pH might affect its levels. Serum and urine S100B show poor concordance, but the arithmetic difference between the two may have potential in specific subgroups for predicting outcomes.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms in sepsis survivors. The results showed that sepsis survivors have high levels of psychiatric symptoms, with PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms decreasing to varying degrees within a year.

Summary: The study investigated the role of S100B protein in sepsis-related encephalopathy. The results demonstrate that S100B inhibition has an impact on the neuroinflammatory response in sepsis rats and can improve cognitive function and emotional behavior.

Arundic acid (ONO-2526) inhibits stimulated-S100B secretion in inflammatory conditions

Adriana Fernanda K. Vizuete et al.

Summary: The study found that aspirin directly affects the secretion of S100B, suggesting that the extracellular levels of this astroglial protein may mediate the action of this compound. Additionally, aspirin has no effect on basal S100B secretion but can inhibit stimulated S100B secretion.

Multifaced Roles of HDL in Sepsis and SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Renal Implications

Alessandra Stasi et al.

Summary: HDL not only participates in cholesterol transport, but also exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, anti-thrombotic, and anti-infection properties. Changes in the amount and composition of HDL during sepsis lead to dysregulated host immune response and endothelial dysfunction. The multifaceted relationship between kidney dysfunction, dyslipidemia, and inflammation encourages further exploration of connecting mechanisms.
