The Role of Metagenomics and Next-Generation Sequencing in Infectious Disease Diagnosis

Steve Miller et al.

Summary: Majority of studies show that mNGS has similar sensitivity to specific PCR assays and can identify more potential pathogens than conventional methods. Concerns remain about contamination and detection of nonclinically significant organisms, highlighting the importance of careful interpretation of pathogenicity and potential association with clinical syndromes. Further research is needed to evaluate the improvement in clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of mNGS testing.

Identification of a novel drug-resistant community-acquired Nocardia spp. in a patient with bronchiectasis

Zhengtu Li et al.

Summary: A previously unknown Nocardia species (GZ2020(T)) was isolated from a patient with bronchiectasis and recurrent pneumonia. It is resistant to multiple drugs but susceptible to linezolid and moxifloxacin, posing a health threat to patients.

Case report: pulmonary nocardiosis caused by Nocardia exalbida in an immunocompetent patient

Seitaro Abe et al.

Summary: Nocardiosis is known as an opportunistic infection in immunocompromised hosts, but it occasionally has been reported in immunocompetent patients. The first case of pulmonary nocardiosis caused by N. exalbida in an immunocompetent patient was successfully treated with Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole and minocycline.

Whole genome sequencing reveals the genomic diversity, taxonomic classification, and evolutionary relationships of the genus Nocardia

Shuai Xu et al.

Summary: Nocardia is a complex genus of aerobic actinomycetes with misunderstood clinical presentations, but a study on its pan-genome clarified genetic diversity and proposed a high-accuracy phylogenomic approach leading to the discovery of new species and reclassification of strains. Additionally, a novel locus for inferring phylogeny was identified, enhancing insight into the evolutionary relationships within this genus.
