Convergent alteration of lung tissue microbiota and tumor cells in lung cancer

Hui Dong et al.

Summary: The study found that lung tumor microbiota from smokers contained more PAH-degrading microbes, and TP53 mutation was more prevalent in smokers. Further analysis showed that there was consistency between the changes in the microbiota of smokers and tumor cells, and TP53-mutated tumor microbiota exhibited dysregulation of the p53 signaling pathway.

Effect of gut microbiota on LPS-induced acute lung injury by regulating the TLR4/NF-kB signaling pathway

Jia Tang et al.

Summary: The study explores the regulatory mechanism of gut flora in the host defense against LPS-induced ALI through the TLR4/NF-kB pathway. It is found that gut microbiota imbalance may regulate the TLR4/NF-kB signaling pathway in the lung immune system, activating oxidative stress in the lung and mediating lung injury through the regulation of the gut barrier. Additionally, fecal microbiota transplantation impairs the activity of the TLR4/NF-kB signaling pathway in the lung and decreases oxidative stress in animals with ALI by restoring the gut microecology.

Microbiota Biomarkers for Lung Cancer

Qixin Leng et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential use of microbiome as biomarkers for the early detection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Certain bacterial genera were found to be associated with NSCLC, with Acidovorax and Veillonella identified as sputum biomarkers for lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), Capnocytophaga as a biomarker for lung adenocarcinoma (AC), and Acidovorax for distinguishing between SCC and AC. The sputum microbiome showed promise as noninvasive biomarkers for NSCLC early detection and classification.

Commensal microbiota contributes to predicting the response to immune checkpoint inhibitors in non-small-cell lung cancer patients

Chufeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study examined the microbiota in stool and sputum samples of metastatic NSCLC patients receiving immunotherapy, finding distinct signatures between gut and respiratory microbiota, with gut microbiota diversity associated with the response to anti-PD-1 treatment. Higher gut microbiota diversity indicated better response and longer progression-free survival, suggesting a potential predictive value. Analysis of responders and nonresponders showed differences in microbial composition, with Streptococcus abundance positively correlated with CD8(+) T cells, highlighting a relationship between microbiota and immunotherapy response in NSCLC patients. Gut and respiratory microbiota are promising biomarkers for screening suitable candidates for immune checkpoint inhibitor-based immunotherapy.
