Target and Nontarget Screening of PFAS in Biosolids, Composts, and Other Organic Waste Products for Land Application in France

Gabriel Munoz et al.

Summary: This study characterized the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in organic waste products used in agricultural fields in France. The results showed that PFAS levels were lower in agriculture-derived wastes compared to urban and industrial wastes. Historical municipal biosolids and composts were dominated by specific PFAS, while contemporary urban waste products were dominated by zwitterionic PFAS.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the environment

Marina G. Evich et al.

Summary: PFAS has become a symbol of environmental contamination, attracting public, scientific, and regulatory concern. These compounds are globally distributed through atmospheric and aqueous releases, and they accumulate in biota through multiple pathways. Efforts to remediate PFAS-contaminated matrices are still in their early stages, with a focus on research targeting drinking water.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in water and wastewater: A critical review of their global occurrence and distribution

Sudarshan Kurwadkar et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as anthropogenic organic pollutants, are widely distributed in the aquatic environment and have adverse effects on human health and ecology. This review critically evaluates the global occurrence and distribution of PFAS in water and discusses the evolving regulatory responses to mitigate the risks associated with PFAS. The study highlights the need for international cooperation in managing PFAS contamination.

Global occurrence and probabilistic environmental health hazard assessment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in groundwater and surface waters

Jaylen L. Sims et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have gained global attention due to their chemical properties, environmental contamination, and risks to public health and the environment. This study examined the occurrence and distribution of 24 priority PFASs in global surface waters and groundwater, finding that PFASs levels were highest in rivers and streams, followed by lakes and reservoirs, and lowest in coastal and marine systems. The study also identified significant exceedances of drinking water guideline values for certain PFASs, particularly in Oceania and North America.

Release of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances from finished biosolids in soil mesocosms

Charles E. Schaefer et al.

Summary: This study collected and characterized finished biosolids from seven municipal water resource recovery facilities. The results showed a significant presence of PFAS, with diPAPs being the most common. The total oxidizable precursor assay failed to accurately measure the amount of precursors in the biosolids. Leaching experiments simulating biosolids land application demonstrated sustained leaching of PFAS over a 6-month period.

A review of recent studies on toxicity, sequestration, and degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

Rebecca A. Dickman et al.

Summary: The fate, effects, and treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are of great interest due to their widespread presence in the environment and significant toxicological effects on humans and wildlife. This article reviews selected papers from the Journal of Hazardous Materials on the toxicity, sequestration, and degradation of PFAS, and makes them available as open-access publications to facilitate the distribution of critical knowledge on PFAS. The review discusses routes of toxicity, observed human health effects, in-silico approaches for toxicity evaluation, removal methods, and degradation techniques for PFAS.

Removal and formation of perfluoroalkyl substances in Canadian sludge treatment systems - A mass balance approach

Narasimman Lakshminarasimman et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the behavior of thirteen PFAS in nine Canadian sludge treatment systems and found significant changes in mass flows of target PFAS through different treatment processes. Pelletization and alkaline stabilization processes led to an increase in PFAS mass flow, while some digestion processes resulted in a modest reduction. Long chain PFAS showed varying behaviors in different systems, while short chain PFAS exhibited an increasing trend in some systems.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Australian biosolids

Damien Moodie et al.

Summary: Biosolids samples from 19 Australian WWTPs were analyzed for 44 PFAS, with di-substituted phosphate esters being the dominant compound class contributing 45% of total PFAS mass. Higher PFAS concentrations were observed in urban locations, and there was a weak correlation between PFAS mass and percentage industrial waste contribution in WWTPs.

Linking PFAS partitioning behavior in sewage solids to the solid characteristics, solution chemistry, and treatment processes

Farshad Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the partitioning behavior of 14 PFAS across different secondary wastewater treatment types and sludge stabilization methods. While compound-specific partitioning coefficients showed insignificant differences among treatment methods, sludge stabilization significantly affected the partitioning behavior of biosolid samples. Furthermore, the study found that solid-specific properties such as protein, organic matter, and lipid fractions play a significant role in PFAS sorption to biosolids.
