Occurrence and Exposure Assessment of Bisphenol Analogues Through Different Types of Drinking Water in Korea

Jae-Eun Lim et al.

Summary: The presence of endocrine disruptors in drinking water is a global concern. This study investigated the occurrence of seven bisphenol analogues (BPs) in three types of drinking water. BPA and BPF were detected in almost all samples, with higher concentrations observed in tap water for BPA and purified water for BPF. The estimated daily intake of BPA through drinking water was lower than the tolerable daily intake, suggesting a limited health risk. Toddlers had the highest exposure to BPs.

Occurrence, spatial distribution, and main source identification of ten bisphenol analogues in the dry season of the Pearl River, South China

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the occurrence and distribution of bisphenol analogues (BPs) in surface water, focusing on the Pearl River in South China. The results showed that bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) were the most frequently detected compounds. The source analysis suggested that these BPs may originate from domestic wastewater, wastewater treatment plant effluent, and leaching of microplastics. The calculated estrogenic activity of BPs showed low to medium risks in the surface water.

First report on occurrence of bisphenol A isomers in human serum and whole blood

Zhenming Li et al.

Summary: Studies have shown the worldwide presence of BPA and its toxic effects on human health. The research quantified the concentrations of BPA, BPA-sulfate, and BPA-glucuronide in serum and whole blood samples from Chinese participants, and identified a structural isomer of BPA named B-1-BPA for the first time. These findings provide valuable insights into the metabolism and distribution of BPA in the human body.

Phenolic compounds seasonal occurrence and risk assessment in surface and treated waters in Minas Gerais-Brazil

Ramatisa L. Ramos et al.

Summary: The study monitored the occurrence of phenolic compounds in a river and its treated water by a conventional water treatment plant in Minas Gerais, Brazil throughout a year. High levels of phenolic compounds were detected, with varying efficiency in removal by the treatment plant. The results indicated a significant risk to both environmental and human health.

Bisphenols emerging in Norwegian and Czech aquatic environments show transthyretin binding potency and other less-studied endocrine-disrupting activities

Pavel Sauer et al.

Summary: This study focused on determining the predominant bisphenols in Norwegian sewage sludge, Czech surface waters, and sediment, as well as characterizing their endocrine-disrupting activities. Bisphenol A, BPAF, and BPF were the main compounds found in Norwegian sewage sludge and Czech surface waters, and some bisphenols showed TTR binding potency and anti-endocrine disrupting activities.

Bisphenol A and its analogues in outdoor and indoor air: Properties, sources and global levels

Tijana Vasiljevic et al.

Summary: BPA and its analogues are widely used in plastic synthesis, potentially disrupting the hormonal structure of living organisms. Reports on BPA levels in air are limited, mainly due to anthropogenic activities. China reported the highest outdoor air levels of BPA near a low-tech e-waste recycling site, and indoor dust also revealed bisphenol analogues used in BPA-free products.

Occurrence, Profiles and Ecological Risk of Bisphenol Analogues in a Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant

Deming Gu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and distribution of 7 BPs in a large-scale STP in Beijing, China, and found that BPS and BPA were the predominant congeners in raw sewage. High removal efficiencies were achieved for BPs in the STP, mainly attributed to biodegradation and sorption processes.

Sediments in the mangrove areas contribute to the removal of endocrine disrupting chemicals in coastal sediments of Macau SAR, China, and harbour microbial communities capable of degrading E2, EE2, BPA and BPS

Irina S. Moreira et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentration and degradation capacity of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the coastal environment of Macao, finding widespread presence of BPA associated with mangroves. Furthermore, a bacterial strain, Rhodoccoccus sp. ED55, capable of degrading multiple EDCs was isolated, showing promise for bioremediation of contaminated soils and waters.

Biomonitoring of occupational exposure to bisphenol A, bisphenol S and bisphenol F: A systematic review

Radia Bousoumah et al.

Summary: This study found a lack of recent occupational HBM studies on bisphenols, especially on BPS and BPF. Different methodological designs make comparisons between studies difficult. Few studies have been conducted on the industrial applications of bisphenols outside of Asia.
