In-Vitro Analysis of FeMn-Si Smart Biodegradable Alloy

Ana Maria Roman et al.

Summary: Special materials are required in many applications to fulfill specific medical or industrial necessities. A biodegradable iron-based material with shape memory effect was developed and evaluated for its chemical composition, structural and thermal characterization, as well as corrosion resistance. The results confirm the possibility of a memory effect and a corrosion rate favorable for longer implantation period applications.

Improving the radiopacity of Fe-Mn biodegradable metals by magnetron-sputtered W-Fe-Mn-C coatings: Application for thinner stents

Samira Ravanbakhsh et al.

Summary: In this study, micrometric radiopaque W-Fe-Mn-C coatings were successfully produced by magnetron sputtering plasma deposition. The effect of increased W power on coatings properties was investigated, and it was found that P200 coating exhibited the most suitable morphology, low roughness, and good radiopacity.

Summary: The porous Fe-30Mn biodegradable scaffolds fabricated by SLM exhibited mechanical adaptability, in vitro and long-term in vivo biocompatibility, and long-term in vivo osseointegration performance during 48 weeks in vivo degradation. This suggests that they could be a reliable and practical alternative for repairing load-bearing bone defects.

Evolution of the ε and γ phases in biodegradable Fe-Mn alloys produced using laser powder-bed fusion

Crtomir Donik et al.

Summary: Fe-Mn alloys exhibit gradual degradability and non-magnetic properties, with LPBF parameters influencing their microstructure and chemical composition. The study focused on adapting the energy-density equation by combining five primary LPBF parameters to directly correlate with the Mn content and phase formation. Varying laser power and scanning speed showed linear correlations with hardness, porosity, and corrosion resistance of the LPBF samples.

Microstructure and Thermomechanical Characterization of Fe-28Mn-6Si-5Cr Shape Memory Alloy

Antonio Collazo et al.

Summary: Iron-based shape memory alloys have been extensively studied, with the Fe-28Mn-6Si-5Cr alloy's microstructure and thermomechanical behavior investigated in this paper. The presence of epsilon-martensite and gamma-austenite at room temperature was confirmed, with martensitic transformation temperatures determined and the transformation found to not be completely reversible. Tensile tests characterized the mechanical properties of the alloy and evaluated the shape memory effect.

The Effect of the In-Situ Heat Treatment on the Martensitic Transformation and Specific Properties of the Fe-Mn-Si-Cr Shape Memory Alloys Processed by HSHPT Severe Plastic Deformation

Carmela Gurau et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the temperature evolution of the martensitic phase epsilon induced by the severe plastic deformation in Fe57Mn27Si11Cr5 alloy. The study reveals an antiferromagnetic behavior with Neel temperature around 244 K, directly related to the austenitic gamma-phase, and the sudden increase of resistivity on cooling below the Neel temperature can be explained by increased phonon-electron interaction. In-situ magnetic and electric transport measurements lead to the appearance of bcc-ferrite-like type phase, to the detriment of the epsilon(hcp) martensite and the gamma (fcc) austenite phases.
