Comparison of copper-based Cu-Ni and Cu-Fe nanoparticles synthesized via laser ablation for magnetic hyperthermia and antibacterial applications

Imran Ali et al.

Summary: This study used arc melting to fabricate copper-iron and copper-nickel alloys, which were then used to prepare spherical Cu-Fe and Cu-Ni nanoparticles through laser ablation in water. The synthesized Cu-Ni nanoparticles had an average size of 34 nm, while the Cu-Fe nanoparticles had an average size of 20 nm. Characterization of the materials was done using XRD, VSM, and DLS analyses. Cu-Ni nanoparticles showed higher antibacterial activity than Cu-Fe nanoparticles, and Cu-Ni nanoparticles had slight mutagenic potential against S. typhimurium TA-98 strain but were non-mutagenic against S. typhimurium TA-100 strain. Cu-Fe nanoparticles were non-mutagenic against both strains of S. typhimurium. The specific absorption rates of Cu-Ni nanoparticles were 5.04 and 2.18 W/g, while for Cu-Fe nanoparticles, they were 9.74 and 7.39 W/g, suggesting the potential usefulness of these bimetallic nanomaterials for magnetic hyperthermia.

Surfactant- and Ligand-Free Synthesis of Platinum Nanoparticles in Aqueous Solution for Catalytic Applications

Rashmi P. Charde et al.

Summary: In this study, surfactant-free and organic ligand-free metallic nanoparticles were successfully synthesized in solution. The 5.3 nm platinum nanoparticles were obtained by reducing Pt with sodium borohydride, which acted as both reducing agent and weakly interacting stabilizer. The Pt nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic activity, showing an order of magnitude higher activity compared to the most active catalysts reported in the literature for hexacyanoferrate(III)/thiosulfate redox reactions. This enhanced catalytic activity is hypothesized to be attributed to the increased electron density on the Pt nanoparticle surface provided by the surrounding borohydride ions, as well as the absence of surfactants or organic ligands blocking surface sites.

Metallic Microneedles for Transdermal Drug Delivery: Applications, Fabrication Techniques and the Effect of Geometrical Characteristics

Nikoletta Sargioti et al.

Summary: Current procedures for transdermal drug delivery have limitations in administering nucleic acid and small or large drug molecules, and causing pain and stress for needle phobic individuals. The development of a painless micro-sized device for efficient drug delivery is still needed. Recent advances in 3D printing have made it possible to fabricate metallic microneedle arrays, which have the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional systems. This review summarizes the types and modes of drug delivery of microneedles in transdermal drug delivery, discusses their applications in the treatment of diseases, and explores the fabrication techniques and geometrical characteristics of solid metallic microneedles.

Discrimination of ablation, shielding, and interface layer effects on the steady-state formation of persistent bubbles under liquid flow conditions during laser synthesis of colloids

Mark-Robert Kalus et al.

Summary: Laser ablation in liquids (LAL) has been established as an innovative nanoparticle synthesis method following green chemistry principles, with clean ligand-free surfaces on nanoparticles being an advantage. However, low nanoparticle production efficiency is a disadvantage, especially in highly viscous liquids, due to the influence of persistent bubbles or colloidal nanoparticles. Liquid flow-assisted nanosecond laser ablation of gold showed the importance of transport properties and the formation of interface layers in affecting shielding effects and ablation efficiency. Compared to water, acetone and ethylene glycol produce 30 times more gas per ablated substance, indicating the impact of chemical effects on liquid decomposition and ablation yield. Highest ablation efficiencies and monodisperse qualities are achieved in liquids with low viscosities and gas formation rates at high volumetric flow rates.
