A high Q terahertz metamaterial absorber using concentric elliptical ring resonators for harmful gas sensing applications

Bhargav Appasani et al.

Summary: A nearly perfect metamaterial absorber is proposed for terahertz sensing applications, consisting of two concentric elliptical ring resonators. The design achieves dual band absorption with near perfect absorption through appropriately set parameters. The absorption peaks are caused by currents in the resonators and the sensitivity to the refractive index of the surrounding medium is observed. A sensor based on this design is demonstrated for detecting Methane and Chloroform with high Q-factor and sensitivity.

Numerical Simulations of Metamaterial Absorbers Employing Vanadium Dioxide

Mohammad Reza Rakhshani et al.

Summary: This paper investigates various sensor configurations using optical metamaterial nano-absorbers. The absorption, reflection spectra, sensitivity, and figure of merit are examined numerically, and two triangle-shaped models are found to have the maximum sensitivity and FOM. The study also demonstrates tunability of the absorption bandwidth using vanadium dioxide thin film.

Colon Cancer Detection by Designing and Analytical Evaluation of a Water-Based THz Metamaterial Perfect Absorber

Zohreh Vafapour et al.

Summary: Colon cancer is a common and deadly disease in the United States, with late detection being a major factor in the high number of deaths. Colonoscopies are currently the main method of detection, but they are invasive and time-consuming. A new diagnostic technique using an InSb based device shows promise in differentiating between healthy and cancerous colon tissue based on spectral responses.

Terahertz perfect absorber based on InSb metasurface for both temperature and refractive index sensing

Yongzhi Cheng et al.

Summary: In this paper, a terahertz perfect absorber made of all-dielectric metasurface with periodic sub-wavelength InSb micro-rod array is proposed for temperature and refractive index sensing application. The absorbance of 99.9% at 1.757 THz with a Q-factor of about 53.24 under room temperature is achieved, and the resonance absorption properties can be adjusted by changing the geometric parameters of the structure. The proposed PA shows potential applications in sensors, detectors, filters, and other optoelectronic devices in the THz region.

Optically switchable broadband metasurface absorber based on square ring shaped photoconductive silicon for terahertz waves

Yongzhi Cheng et al.

Summary: An optically switchable broadband metasurface absorber structure based on photoconductive silicon in the terahertz region was numerically demonstrated. The structure showed adjustable absorption rates by controlling the electric conductivity of the silicon array, and exhibited broadband absorption and excellent optically switchable response. The design is polarization-independent, wide-angle, and has potential applications in THz devices.

Plasmonic Chiral Metasurface Absorber Based on Bilayer Fourfold Twisted Semicircle Nanostructure at Optical Frequency

Yongzhi Cheng et al.

Summary: This paper presents a plasmonic chiral metasurface absorber (CMSA) that achieves high selective absorption for right-handed and left-handed circular polarization lights at optical frequency. The CMSA shows strong circular dichroism effects with selective absorption peaks for RCP and LCP lights at different resonance frequencies, reaching absorption rates of 93.2% and 91.6% respectively. The chiroptical response mechanism is illustrated by electric fields distributions of the unit-cell nanostructure, and the influence of CMSA geometry on circular polarization selective absorption is systematically studied.
