Actuation performance of a liquid crystalline elastomer composite reinforced by eiderdown fibers

Nan Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a LCE composite was developed using eiderdown fibers as a flexible reinforcement phase, leading to enhanced actuation performance and mechanical properties. The eiderdown fibers formed a reinforcement network and exhibited strong interfacial adhesion with the matrix. The composite showed excellent crack resistance and fatigue resistance due to the unique properties of the eiderdown fibers.

Actuation of Liquid Crystalline Elastomers at or Below Ambient Temperature

Grant E. Bauman et al.

Summary: Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are emerging material actuators that undergo macroscopic dimensional changes when stimulated. In this study, LCE is prepared using thiol-Michael/thiol-ene reactions, enabling actuation at or below ambient temperature. The alignment of LCE is achieved through mechanical alignment and 3D printing, allowing for high strain and tunable thermotropic response.

An investigation on nematic-isotropic phase transition, viscosity and diffusion coefficient of liquid crystalline elastomers at different temperatures using molecular dynamics simulation

Parastoo Ahmadpour-Samani et al.

Summary: The nematic-isotropic phase transition in liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) has a significant impact on their properties, such as crystallinity, viscosity, and diffusion coefficient. This study used coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the phase transition temperature of LCEs based on a specific monomer. The results suggest that a crosslinker to monomer and flexible spacer ratio of 50% contributes to the highest nematic phase percentage of around 60%. The nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature at this condition is estimated to be 360 K. Additionally, the viscosity and diffusion coefficient of LCEs show that the phase transition temperature has a notable influence on the structural and dynamic properties.

Spontaneous polarisation due to flexoelectric effect in liquid crystalline elastomers prepared by cross-linking under splay distortion

Kazuyuki Hiraoka et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flexoelectric polarization in liquid crystalline elastomers with wedge-shaped mesogens. It is found that the flexoelectric polarization is fixed in the cross-linked elastomers under uniaxial deformation with splay distortion, while almost no electric charge was detected in the uniaxially and uniformly aligned elastomers. X-ray diffractometry reveals that the orientational order partially remains in the temperature region of the pseudo-isotropic phase.

Research progress in processing methods of reversible three-dimensional structures of liquid-crystalline elastomers based on dynamic covalent bonds

Zhang Yu-bai et al.

Summary: Liquid-crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are smart materials capable of reversible macroscopic deformation under external stimuli. The introduction of dynamic covalent bonds allows for new alignment strategies and the ability to change the topological structure of traditional covalent cross-linked networks. LCE reversible three-dimensional structures have specific shapes and can undergo reversible deformation under external stimuli, making them applicable in various fields.

Multiscale Structural Characterization of a Smectic Liquid Crystalline Elastomer upon Mechanical Deformation Using Neutron Scattering

Yuzhan Li et al.

Summary: Liquid crystalline elastomers exhibit unique shape memory behavior due to the combination of liquid crystalline orientation and rubber elasticity. Multiscale structural characterization upon deformation is crucial to understanding the structure-property relationships of these materials. Selective deuteration enables an improved neutron scattering contrast between different domains in the LCE, revealing the presence of highly aligned amorphous domains and the formation of structures in the micrometer scale.

Thermal- and light-responsive programmable shape-memory behavior of liquid crystalline polyurethanes with pendant photosensitive groups

Wenbo Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, a liquid crystalline polyurethane with thermal- and light-responsive programmable shape-memory behavior was prepared via a quaternization reaction. The material exhibited macroscopic deformation under light stimulation, which was induced by the configuration of mesogenic azobenzene units and the motion of polymer chains. The hard segments of PU provided a skeleton to freeze the polymer chain conformation and ensure temporary shape maintenance, with potential applications in flexible photomechanical devices and soft robotics.

Remarkable smectic phase behaviour in odd-membered liquid crystal dimers: the CT6O.m series

Rebecca Walker et al.

Summary: The synthesis and characterization of the first ten homologues of CT6O.m were reported, revealing a rich smectic polymorphism. Each CT6O.m homologue exhibited up to four smectic phases, with CT6O.10 showing a different sequence of smectic phases below the N phase. The phases were confirmed using a combination of techniques including polarised optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and optical birefringence studies.
