On relaxation and vibrational dynamics in the thermodynamic states of a chiral smectogenic glass-former

Anna Drzewicz et al.

Summary: This article presents the complete characteristics of a chiral liquid crystal compound, including its phase situation, relaxation, and vibrational dynamics. The compound forms two enantiotropic chiral smectic phases, a hexatic smectic phase, and two crystal phases. The XRD patterns suggest a similar structure for both crystal phases. The research reveals complex relaxation dynamics in different thermodynamic states and a consistent behavior of the dielectric permittivity across all phases. The compound is found to be a fragile glass-forming system based on its high fragility index. The stretching vibrations of the -COO- and -COC- groups are sensitive to structural changes during phase transitions.

Influence of fluorosubstitution on physical properties of the smectogenic chiral ester

Aleksandra Deptuch et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physical properties of the double-fluorinated compound 3F7FPhF using experimental methods and computational simulations. Compared to the previously studied single-fluorinated compound, the double-fluorinated compound exhibits different phase transition characteristics and physical properties. The presence of the second fluorine atom in the molecular core leads to various effects, including reduced layer shrinkage, decreased tilt angle, and increased switching time.

Kinetics of cold crystallization in two liquid crystalline fluorinated homologues exhibiting the vitrified smectic CA* phase

Aleksandra Deptuch et al.

Summary: Dielectric relaxation processes in the supercooled antiferroelectric smectic CA* phase and crystallization kinetics of two chiral fluorinated compounds are investigated. Fragility parameters and coupling coefficients are determined to understand the differences in crystallization behavior. Influence of the relaxation time of the PH process in the smectic CA* phase on the crystallization kinetics is also discussed.

Fluorosubstitution of the Molecular Core in Chiral Esters with Short Terminal Carbon Chains: Influence on Physical Properties

Aleksandra Deptuch et al.

Summary: A comparative study of chiral liquid crystalline compounds 4HH and 4FF was conducted using complementary methods. The study reported the crystalline phase transitions, crystallization kinetics, and the influence of fluorosubstitution on the structural and electro-optic properties of the smectic phases. Unit cell parameters of the crystal phases of 4HH and 4FF were determined.

Comparative study of crystallization of two fluorinated chiral liquid crystalline compounds differing by fluorosubstitution of the molecular core

Aleksandra Deptuch et al.

Summary: Crystallization and polymorphism of two chiral liquid crystalline compounds exhibiting the antiferroelectric smectic C-A* phase, one fluorosubstituted in the aromatic molecular core, were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The fluorosubstituted compound exhibited faster crystallization at lower cooling rates, while the non-fluorosubstituted compound showed faster crystallization during fast cooling and isothermal conditions after fast cooling. The differences in crystallization kinetics were discussed based on thermodynamic properties and molecular dynamics studied in previous papers.

Comparative study of electrooptic, dielectric, and structural properties of two glassforming antiferroelectric mixtures with a high tilt angle

Aleksandra Deptuch et al.

Summary: This study reports the vitrification of the antiferroelectric smectic-C-A* phase for the orthoconic mixture W-1000 and its new derivative W-356. Molecular dynamics, structural parameters comparison, and electrooptic properties of the mixtures were investigated, revealing differences possibly attributed to dimer formation and aromatic molecular core structure.

Molecular Dynamics and Kinetics of Isothermal Cold Crystallization in the Chiral Smectogenic 3F7HPhH6 Glassformer

Aleksandra Deptuch et al.

Summary: The investigation focused on the glass transition of the antiferroelectric smectic CA* phase and the cold crystallization of 3F7HPhH6, determining it as a glassformer with intermediate fragility. The duplication of the α-process observed exclusively upon heating is connected with the pre-transitional effect. The presence of two crystal phases likely influences the kinetics of cold crystallization based on comparisons with previous results for similar compounds.

Modifications of FLC Physical Properties through Doping with Fe2O3 Nanoparticles (Part I)

Sebastian Lalik et al.

Summary: This paper systematically studies the influence of gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on the physical parameters of the liquid crystalline matrix, demonstrating significant modifications even at low concentrations. The addition of nanoparticles reduces phase transition temperatures and broadens certain phases, while also affecting various parameters such as spontaneous polarization and tilt angle.

Investigation of crystallization kinetics and its relationship with molecular dynamics for chiral fluorinated glassforming smectogen 3F5HPhH6

Aleksandra Deptuch et al.

Summary: The study investigated the phase transitions, crystallization kinetics, and molecular dynamics of a specific organic compound, revealing the vitrification of the antiferroelectric hexatic phase, different behaviors of non-isothermal cold crystallization at various heating rates, and the temperature dependence of the crystallization rate. The results suggest a mainly diffusion-controlled cold crystallization process and favor two-dimensional crystal growth rather than three-dimensional growth. The lower activation energy observed during heating indicates a transition between crystal phases at different rates.
