A critical review on ibuprofen removal from synthetic waters, natural waters, and real wastewaters by advanced oxidation processes

Enric Brillas

Summary: Ibuprofen is a widely prescribed drug with potential harmful effects on human health, as it can be found in various types of wastewater and drinking water. Conventional treatments are inefficient in removing IBP, leading to the development of advanced oxidation processes to mitigate its impact.

Spatiotemporal trends and annual fluxes of pharmaceuticals in a Scottish priority catchment

Lydia Niemi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence and distribution of eight commonly used pharmaceuticals in the River Dee, Scotland, and found trace contamination throughout the river indicating potential diffuse pollution sources. The study also highlighted higher concentrations of certain compounds during low flow and warm seasons, raising concerns for environmental and human health impacts.

Comparing total and accessible concentrations of hydrophobic organic contaminants in sediments and suspended particulate matter in the Danube River

Michaela Belhacova-Minarikova et al.

Summary: The contamination of aquatic ecosystems by hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) is often evaluated based on their concentrations in riverbed sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM). However, the total HOC concentration (C-TOT) in sediment or SPM has limited value in assessing the exposure of benthic or pelagic organisms. The accessible HOC concentration (C-AS) provides a useful parameter for quantifying the overall pool of HOC available for partitioning to the water phase or biota. This study compared C-TOT and C-AS in SPM and sediment samples collected from the Danube River and found that they provide complementary but not interchangeable information on HOC contamination.

Screening of legacy and emerging substances in surface water, sediment, biota and groundwater samples collected in the Siverskyi Donets River Basin employing wide-scope target and suspect screening

Varvara Nikolopoulou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the pollution status of the Siverskyi Donets River Basin in Ukraine, finding high levels of industrial chemicals such as bisphenol A and DEHP in the ecosystem. Additionally, long-term banned chemicals like PCBs and DDT degradation products were detected in river sediment samples. A risk assessment based on (eco)toxicity threshold values from the NORMAN Ecotoxicology Database was conducted to prioritize compounds for future monitoring and establishing a list of specific pollutants for the river basin. Compared to similar studies in other river basins in Ukraine, the pollution by chemicals in the Siverskyi Donets basin was significantly lower.

Pharmaceuticals in water and sediment of small streams under the pressure of urbanization: Concentrations, interactions, and risks

Attila Csaba Kondor et al.

Summary: This study focused on the occurrence, distribution, and environmental risk of 111 PhACs and 7 trace elements in small streams in the urbanizing region of Budapest, Hungary. Carbamazepine was the most frequently identified PhAC in water, while Lidocaine was the most frequently occurring PhAC in sediment. The study found that PhAC concentrations were independent of the distance from the WWTP effluents, and diclofenac had the highest environmental risk in the sampling area.

Structural Diversity of Organic Contaminants in a meso-scaled River System

Christina A. Schwanen et al.

Summary: The study employed GC/MS non-target screening to analyze the chemical diversity in the Rur river, identifying various organic contaminants and pinpointing major emission sources as wastewater treatment plants and the paper industry. Temporal variations in organic contamination were investigated over the years 2004, 2015, and 2020, revealing slight changes in the overall composition of pollutants in the river while maintaining high chemical diversity.

Occurrence and mass flows of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in Sweden's three largest lakes and associated rivers

Daniel Malnes et al.

Summary: This study assessed the occurrence and mass flows of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in Sweden's main lakes and associated rivers. The study found that the CEC concentration in river water was generally higher than in lake water. Seasonal variations of CECs were observed at urban lake sites. Further investigations are needed to understand the impact of CECs on the ecosystem and human health, as these lakes are used as drinking water reservoirs.

Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in high mountain lakes, Mexico

Liliana Garcia-Solorio et al.

Summary: Pollution levels of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls were investigated in two alpine lakes in central Mexico. The study found that endosulfan was the most frequent and abundant pollutant. This research provides important insights into the pollution status of high mountain lakes in Mexico and highlights the need for policymakers to address the use of these chemicals in the region's productive activities.

A review on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons distribution in freshwater ecosystems and their toxicity to benthic fauna

Fatima Jesus et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hazardous pollutants that are widely present in the environment and can accumulate in sediment, posing a threat to benthic communities in freshwater environments. This review provides an overview of the distribution of PAHs in freshwater environments and their toxicity to benthic fauna, and highlights the need for further research on the environmental toxicity of PAHs in combination with other stressors.

The Biological Assessment and Rehabilitation of the World's Rivers: An Overview

Maria Joao Feio et al.

Summary: The biological assessment and rehabilitation of rivers worldwide still face major gaps, with limited funding and technology being the main constraints for quality assessment and ecological restoration efforts. While countries in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Americas have relatively standardized biological assessment practices, regions like South America, Africa, and Mexico need to strengthen their biological monitoring efforts.

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the occurrence, distribution, toxicity equivalence, and health risks of dl-PCBs in surface sediments from the Liaohe River Protected Area. The results showed that the PCBs in sediments mainly came from electronic waste and paint additives, with relatively lower levels of toxic equivalent quantity compared to previous data. Human health risk assessment indicated that the cancer-related hazardous ratio was within an acceptable range.

Suspect screening workflow comparison for the analysis of organic xenobiotics in environmental water samples

B. Gonzalez-Gaya et al.

Summary: Suspect screening techniques can determine a wider range of compounds than traditional target analysis, but the performance relies on peak annotation procedures. A study compared four workflows using different suspect lists, revealing that while differences were observed at lower confidence levels, only 4 features were annotated differently among the workflows. The approach based on the mzCloud library provided satisfactory results with a simpler method for analyzing organic xenobiotics in environmental water samples.
