Coupling mountain and lowland watershed models to characterize nutrient loading: An eight-year investigation in Lake Chaohu Basin

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study successfully characterized nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loading in a mountain-lowland mixed watershed system by coupling different models. The investigation revealed that three watersheds (Nanfei, Pai and Baishitian River Watersheds) contributed significantly to N and P loading in Lake Chaohu Basin. Additionally, polders in the basin exhibited higher N and P retention capacity compared to mountain watersheds. Population density, precipitation intensity, and soil erosion were identified as critical drivers of N and P loss.

Water quality assessment of rivers in Lake Chaohu Basin (China) using water quality index

Zhaoshi Wu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the water quality in the rivers of Lake Chaohu Basin, finding a moderate overall water quality state with significant seasonal variations. Three distinct groups were identified based on 15 environmental parameters. The minimum water quality index (WQI(min)), consisting of 5 crucial parameters, showed no significant difference from the WQI based on all parameters and has the potential for universal application in river water quality assessment in different basins.

River water quality index prediction and uncertainty analysis: A comparative study of machine learning models

Seyed Babak Haji Seyed Asadollah et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new ensemble machine learning model, Extra Tree Regression (ETR), for predicting monthly Water Quality Index (WQI) values at the Lam Tsuen River in Hong Kong. The ETR model generally produces more accurate WQI predictions for both training and testing phases, demonstrating improvement in prediction performance and reduction in the number of input parameters compared to previous approaches.
