Acidic and alkaline deep eutectic solvents pre-treatment to produce high aspect ratio microfibrillated cellulose

Ahlem Mnasri et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of three deep eutectic solvents (DES) for microfibrillation. After pre-treatment in DES, cellulose fibres were ground to produce microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). The betaine hydrochloride-urea DES system showed the most significant improvement in the microfibrillation process, resulting in long and thin microfibril bundles and individualized microfibrils. The MFC produced from DES treatment exhibited good mechanical properties and higher quality index compared to enzymatic hydrolysis.

Structural and Thermal Properties of Starch Plasticized with Glycerol/Urea Mixture

Magdalena Paluch et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of plasticizing systems on the structural and thermal properties of thermoplastic starch (TPS), finding that the use of urea as a plasticizer improves the efficiency of the plasticization process compared to glycerol alone. Additionally, XRD analysis confirms the beneficial effect of urea on inhibiting the starch retrogradation process.

Thermoplastic Starch/Ternary Deep Eutectic Solvent/Lignin Materials: Study of Physicochemical Properties and Fire Behavior

Magdalena Zdanowicz et al.

Summary: Thermo plastic starch (TPS) was plasticized for the first time using ternary deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on urea/resorcinol/choline chloride (URCC) and enriched with lignin. The TPS modified with DES and lignin exhibited good mechanical properties, thermal compressing properties, and superior fire-retardant properties compared to commercial agricultural plastics. These materials can be used as biodegradable, safe, and functional mulches without the need for removal from cultivating fields.

Deep eutectic solvents based on urea, polyols and sugars for starch treatment

Magdalena Zdanowicz

Summary: This study explored deep eutectic solvents based on urea, polyols, and monosugars for potato starch treatment, finding that urea/glycerol mixture was the most effective in plasticizing starch, resulting in highly flexible films with elongation at break exceeding 200%. The introduction of urea as a DES inhibited recrystallization of starch in the polysaccharide matrix.
