Myocardial injury detected by T1 and T2 mapping on CMR predicts subsequent cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction in patients with breast cancer treated by epirubicin-based chemotherapy or left-sided RT

Enver Tahir et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the serial laboratory and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) parameters to predict cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) after epirubicin-based chemotherapy compared with left-sided radiotherapy. The results showed that T1 and T2 relaxation times increased after epirubicin-based chemotherapy, but not after left-sided radiotherapy. Combined use of increased T1 and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) had good sensitivity and specificity in predicting CTRCD.

Targeted Drug Delivery Biopolymers Effectively Inhibit Breast Tumor Growth and Prevent Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity

Sonja Dragojevic et al.

Summary: Doxorubicin is a widely used anticancer drug, but its adverse effects on healthy tissues limit its clinical application. To address this issue, researchers have developed a thermally responsive biopolymer carrier for doxorubicin that can be targeted to tumor tissue by applying heat.

Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Early Detection of Cardiotoxicity Induced by Cancer Therapies

Xiaoting Wei et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the application of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) techniques in the early detection of myocardial injury caused by cancer therapies. The existing studies and ongoing clinical trials using CMR for assessing subclinical ventricular dysfunction and myocardial changes are summarized. Continuous non-invasive monitoring of myocardial toxicity associated with cancer therapy has the potential to improve the survival rate of cancer patients.

Summary: The study assessed the early cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin in breast cancer patients using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Significant changes in cardiac parameters were observed post-chemotherapy, assisting in the early initiation of preventive cardiac strategies for these patients.

Summary: Cardiac imaging techniques utilize various physical entities such as sound waves, X-rays, magnetic fields, and nuclear energy, along with sophisticated computer hardware and software, to reconstruct the dynamic aspect of cardiac function in different forms. This review outlines the fundamental principles of the most widely used techniques and provides specific guidance on when to use which imaging modality for analyzing different aspects of cardiac function.

Summary: Currently, there is an expansion in the pharmacological possibilities of treating cancer, leading to an increase in life expectancy with chemotherapy and supportive treatment. However, complications such as anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy are a significant concern, requiring further research to understand its development mechanisms through new models.
