How spaceflight challenges human cardiovascular health

Summary: Harsh environmental conditions in space, such as weightlessness and radiation exposure, have negative effects on cardiovascular function and structure. Preventive cardiology research is crucial for ensuring safe space travel. Future space missions, including those to the Moon and Mars, will create challenges for cardiovascular health and limit medical management. Studies conducted in space and on Earth have shown that weightlessness causes fluid shift towards the head, which can lead to various spaceflight-related health issues. Additionally, cardiovascular unloading during space travel may result in cardiopulmonary deconditioning and cardiac atrophy. It is important to develop targeted preventive measures and technologies to identify vascular risks early on to maintain cardiovascular health during space missions.
