Elucidating the Mechanistic Origin of a Spin State-Dependent FeNx-C Catalyst toward Organic Contaminant Oxidation via Peroxymonosulfate Activation

Bofan Zhang et al.

Summary: Single-atom FeNx-C catalyst with Fe-pyridinic N-4 structure exhibited superior catalytic activity in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for organic contaminant oxidation. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy were used to validate various Fe species and their relative amounts in the catalyst. The study revealed positive correlations between relative content of high-spin state species and catalytic performance, providing insights into reactive species generation and electron transfer pathways in the FeNx-C/PMS system.

Identification of Fenton-like active Cu sites by heteroatom modulation of electronic density

Xiao Zhou et al.

Summary: Controlling the electronic structure of Cu-N-4 sites through heteroatom doping engineering can optimize the activation ability of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Experimental results show that the electron-deficient Cu-N-4/C-B exhibits the highest oxidation capacity, while the electron-enriched Cu-N-4/C-P leads to a decrease in activation ability. This study provides a new approach to finely control the electronic structure of Cu-N-4 sites at the atomic level and guide the design of smart Fenton-like catalysts.

Developing a solar photothermal method for peroxydisulfate activation for water purification: Taking degradation of sulfamethoxazole as an example

Han-Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel photothermal method to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for degrading sulfamethoxazole in water purification. Using carbon black as the photothermal conversion agent enhanced the activation of PDS under simulated sunlight, resulting in significantly faster degradation of sulfamethoxazole compared to traditional solar irradiation activation.

Single-Atom Fe Catalyst Outperforms Its Homogeneous Counterpart for Activating Peroxymonosulfate to Achieve Effective Degradation of Organic Contaminants

Kun Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, FeN4 structures were constructed on carbon nanotubes to obtain single-atom catalysts, which successfully generated reactive iron species (RFeS) for the selective degradation of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) over a wide pH range. The results revealed the mechanism of RFeS generation and the important role of carbon nanotubes in enhancing the reactivity of FeN4=O intermediates.
