Qiang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for designing metal-free NORR catalyst by introducing a unique Ccenter-CN2 configuration into hexagonal boron nitride-graphene heterostructures. The hBN-graphene heterostructures demonstrate excellent NORR activity with low limiting potential and efficient suppression of competitive reaction. Ab-initio molecular dynamic simulations suggest that these heterostructures exhibit considerable thermal stability, providing a promising avenue for metal-free catalyst design in NORR.

Alteration of Electronic Band Structure via a Metal-Semiconductor Interfacial Effect Enables High Faradaic Efficiency for Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation

Ashmita Biswas et al.

Summary: The interfacial engineering strategy is crucial for improving the Faradaic efficiency for the environmentally benign electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction, as it involves developing catalysts with weak H-adsorption affinity to suppress the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Experimental and computational studies show that by synthesizing the electrocatalyst NPG@SnS2 using this strategy, the efficiency for the NRR is significantly enhanced due to charge redistribution, Mott-Schottky effect, and band bending across the contact layer at the interface of NPG.

Honeycomb Boron on Al(111): From the Concept of Borophene to the Two-Dimensional Boride

Alexei B. Preobrajenski et al.

Summary: The structural and electronic properties of two-dimensional honeycomb boron on the Al(111) substrate have been elucidated through a combination of experimental techniques and theoretical calculations. It is found that honeycomb boron induces reconstruction of the top metal layer, forming a stoichiometric AlB2 sheet on top of Al, in contrast to graphene behavior on lattice-mismatched metal surfaces. The electronic states of honeycomb boron exhibit a clear separation into pi- and sigma-subsystems, indicating the 2D nature of the electronic system in both mono-layer AlB2 and bulk AlB2.

Insights into the electric double-layer capacitance of two-dimensional electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks

Jamie W. Gittins et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promising potential for use in electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). The study found that the capacitive performance of these nearly isostructural MOFs is largely independent of the identity of the metal node and organic linker molecule. The performance of EDLCs is uniquely defined by the 3D structure of the electrodes and the electrolyte, with limitations in stable double-layer voltage window and capacitance retention compared to traditional electrode materials.
