Modelling of Greek Lakes Water Quality Using Earth Observation in the Framework of the Water Framework Directive (WFD)

Vassiliki Markogianni et al.

Summary: This study combines remote sensing data and ground measurements to provide water quality assessment models for lakes in Greece. The study finds that accurate quantitative models can be established for different lake characteristics, and the trophic status of the lakes can be evaluated.

Spatio-Temporal Interpolation and Bias Correction Ordering Analysis for Hydrological Simulations: An Assessment on a Mountainous River Basin

Charalampos Skoulikaris et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dilemma of using climate datasets for hydrological simulations and explores the impact of the order of bias correction and spatio-temporal interpolation on simulation accuracy. By comparing different datasets and conducting statistical analyses and hydrological simulations, the study finds that bias correction followed by spatio-temporal interpolation results in high correlation with reference data. This research provides a useful roadmap for preparing gridded climate change data for hydrological modeling.

Channel evolution of the Himalayan tributaries in northern Brahmaputra plain in recent centuries

Rajesh Kumar Sah et al.

Summary: This paper uses multiple geo-informational data to document the channel evolution of the Himalayan tributaries in the northern Brahmaputra plain. It suggests that several tributaries have undergone major avulsions and experienced changes in width and morphology. The study also indicates an intensified sedimentation in the region recently, possibly associated with seismic activities.

Transboundary Cooperation Through Water Related EU Directives' Implementation Process. The Case of Shared Waters Between Bulgaria and Greece

Charalampos Skoulikaris

Summary: This study investigates the progress in the management of transboundary surface waters and groundwaters shared between Bulgaria and Greece before and after the implementation of the EU's common water policies. It found significant improvement in the quality of surface waters, but identified issues with transboundary floods. The groundwater bodies were in good status, but there is still room for further improvement.

Issues of Natural Resources Law for Adopting Catchment-Based Measures for Flood Risk Management in Sweden

Susana Goytia

Summary: The EU Floods Directive emphasizes integrated flood risk management at a catchment scale, but the implementation of catchment-based measures in Sweden's energy, agriculture, and forestry sectors may be hindered by legal issues. Existing legal frameworks could restrict and impede the introduction of relevant measures, highlighting the need to strengthen the catchment perspective in flood risk management planning processes.

Stationary vs non-stationary modelling of flood frequency distribution across northwest England

Sina Hesarkazzazi et al.

Summary: Recent extraordinary flood events in northwest England have raised questions about changes in the magnitude and frequency of river flows in the region. Analysis of data from 39 river gauging stations suggests a marked non-stationary behavior and up to a 75% increase in flood quantile estimates during the study period. Annual rainfall is found to explain the largest proportion of variability in peak flow series relative to other predictors, providing a useful framework for updating flood quantile estimates.

Impact of EU Environmental Policy Implementation on the Quality and Status of Greek Rivers

Nikolaos Theodor Skoulikidis et al.

Summary: Based on historical and WFD-compliant data, the recent inter-annual ecological status and long-term water quality trends of eighteen characteristic Greek rivers have been assessed to implement EU environmental policies. The findings reveal poor ecological status in most river outflows, improvements in WWTP infrastructure, and reductions in nitrate levels due to decreased fertilizer use and successful Nitrates Directive implementation. The study also highlights weaknesses in WFD implementation and proposes concrete solutions for better conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems.

Alteration of the Ecohydrological Status of the Intermittent Flow Rivers and Ephemeral Streams due to the Climate Change Impact (Case Study: Tsiknias River)

Soumaya Nabih et al.

Summary: Research indicates that Mediterranean rivers will undergo significant changes in hydrological characteristics as climate change intensifies, posing a major threat to intermittent flow rivers and ephemeral streams. Over the next 100 years, a significant decrease in annual flow and an increase in extreme flood events are predicted for the Tsiknias River in Greece. The occurrence patterns of hyporheic and edaphic aquatic states are also expected to be affected due to climate change.
