Analysis of hydrological alteration and environmental flow in Sone river basin

Ankit Ranjan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the hydrological status of the Sone river basin in Bihar region, India, and developed flow duration curves to show the time duration-frequency of low-flow events. The results indicate that the hydrological status of the river basin is in a highly altered state. The proposed methodology for designing environmental flow considering hydrological alteration effects can be used to develop long-term strategies to protect the riverine ecosystem in the Sone river basin.

Stream flow dynamics under current and future land cover conditions in Atsela Watershed, Northern Ethiopia

Haftu Gebretekle et al.

Summary: The study aimed to detect land cover change over the past three decades and estimate its impact on stream flow dynamics. Landsat satellite images were used for land cover classification for selected years. The findings indicated significant land cover changes, with a notable increase in cultivated land and bare land. The SWAT model evaluation showed that land cover change had a significant impact on stream flow dynamics.

A comprehensive intercomparison study between a lumped and a fully distributed hydrological model across a set of 50 catchments in the United Kingdom

Sumit Sinha et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of a widely used lumped conceptual hydrological model (GR4J) and a well-established fully distributed mesoscale hydrological model (mHM). The results show that the lumped model performs as well as, or better than, the distributed model.

Evaluating a reservoir parametrization in the vector-based global routing model mizuRoute (v2.0.1) for Earth system model coupling

Inne Vanderkelen et al.

Summary: Human-controlled reservoirs have a significant impact on the global water cycle, but the accurate representation of reservoir regulation is lacking in Earth system models. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a widely used reservoir parametrization in a global river-routing model and highlights its clear added value in simulating storage for large reservoirs. However, for global applications, the performance of the reservoir parametrization is similar to representing reservoirs as natural lakes.

Summary: This paper introduces a generic diagnostic reservoir operation tool (DROT) developed based on generic properties derived from analytical optimization studies and data mining procedures. Users can diagnose specific reservoir operation problems by providing required inputs and applying particular properties and/or procedures. DROT is available online with auxiliary tools such as data retrieval and visualization.

A Comparative Assessment of Hydrological Models in the Upper Cauvery Catchment

Robyn Horan et al.

Summary: This study compared the predictive capability of three hydrological models and their mean ensemble in a heavily influenced catchment in Peninsular India. The results showed that the mean ensemble had better predictive ability in catchments with reservoirs, indicating that utilizing multiple models could help overcome uncertainties in input data and poor reservoir operation functionality within individual models.

A large-scale comparison of Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining (AI&DM) techniques in simulating reservoir releases over the Upper Colorado Region

Tiantian Yang et al.

Summary: This study compares 12 different parameterized AI&DM models in simulating controlled reservoir outflows in the Upper Colorado Region, United States, and finds that the Random Forecast and Long-Short-Term-Memory models consistently exhibit the best statistical performance. The Multi-Layer Perceptron model and Extreme Gradient Boosting Tree Algorithm perform more stably under complex input scenarios. The performance of different AI&DM models is closely related to the characteristics of the reservoirs.

Investigation of inner-basin variation: Impact of large reservoirs on water regimes of downstream water bodies

Xue Dai et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the Three Gorges Dam on interconnected water bodies downstream, focusing on the changes in flow alterations and river-lake interactions. Results suggest decreased water storage in tributary lakes after the dam's activation, leading to severe droughts and diminished ability to replenish the main river. The dam's impact on flow increase during dry season weakens downstream, while its effect on flow decrease during wet season exacerbates along the mainstream, especially downstream of lake outlets.

Descriptive or normative: How does reservoir operations modeling influence hydrological simulations under climate change?

Federico Giudici et al.

Summary: Human activities have a significant impact on the hydrological cycle, yet are often given less importance in hydrological models compared to natural processes. Model accuracy can deteriorate in river basins with human impacts, where water infrastructure operations are commonly based on observational data. Different approaches to modeling reservoir operations are compared in this study, highlighting the importance of considering future dynamics impacted by human activities.

Complexity analyses of Godavari and Krishna river streamflow using the concept of entropy

Rahul Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: The study used complexity analysis and entropy values to examine the hydrological changes in the Godavari and Krishna Rivers, revealing significant spatial and temporal variations in complexity. Three out of five selected stations showed a significant decreasing trend in streamflow, which could be attributed to both anthropogenic and climatic factors.
