Identification and determination of the volatile organics of third-hand smoke from different cigarettes and clothing fabrics

Elahe Tondro Borujeni et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the tobacco-derived volatile organics of cigarette third-hand smoke on different clothing fabrics, with results showing that natural fibers are more capable of holding and emitting third-hand smoke than synthetic fibers. Sixteen compounds, including benzene, toluene, xylene, pyridine, limonene, naphthalene, furfural and nicotine, were quantified in third-hand cigarette smoke, with high toxicity and/or abundance in smoke. The desorption times after exposure to cigarette smoke ranging from 15 to 45 minutes showed no significant decrease in the concentration of organic compounds in third-hand smoke.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption and release behavior of volatile organic compounds by different fiber types, confirming low release from cotton and wool, high release from polyester, and low release from viscose. Viscose shows better adsorption characteristics for primarily polar volatile organic compounds, similar to cotton.

Adhesion and Removal of Thirdhand Smoke from Indoor Fabrics: A Method for Rapid Assessment and Identification of Chemical Repositories

Giovanna L. Pozuelos et al.

Summary: The study aims to develop a rapid and accessible method to measure and evaluate thirdhand smoke contamination in household fabrics. Results indicate that extraction efficiency of thirdhand smoke is influenced by fabric type, heat, and humidity. Therefore, remediation of thirdhand smoke environments may need to vary depending on the fabric reservoirs being treated.
