Aerogel nanoarchitectonics based on cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibers from eucalyptus pulp: preparation and comparative study

Wenkai Zhu et al.

Summary: Nanocellulose-based materials, particularly aerogels, have attracted attention for their unique properties. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were isolated from eucalyptus pulp using acidolysis and oxidation/mechanical methods. Two different aerogels were prepared from the CNCs and CNFs, and their properties were compared. The aerogels exhibited different characteristics in terms of morphology, chemical structure, chemical composition, shrinkage rate, internal structure, thermal degradation, biophysical properties, and mechanical properties. The shrinkage of the aerogels was effectively controlled through a supercritical CO2 drying process. Additionally, the CNF aerogels showed enhanced thermal stability and compressive strength compared to the CNC aerogels. The study provides fundamental knowledge on the fabrication of nanocellulose-based aerogels and their characteristics.

Cellulose Nanofiber-Based Aerogels from Wheat Straw: Influence of Surface Load and Lignin Content on Their Properties and Dye Removal Capacity

Ramon Morcillo-Martin et al.

Summary: Water pollution is a serious global issue. Nanocellulose-based aerogels have excellent adsorption capacities, making them ideal for water purification. In this study, (ligno)cellulose nanofibers were obtained from wheat straw residues using different pre-treatments to produce bioaerogels with varying consistencies. The materials were characterized and tested for dye removal capacity. The results showed that the adsorption capacity was better for TEMPO-oxidized aerogels, while the residual lignin content in one type of aerogel showed improvement in removal capacity.

Xi-Que Wu et al.

Summary: A new strategy has been developed to produce cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and films from raw elephant grass using a recyclable spent coffee-derived solid acid (SC-SO3H) catalyst and deep eutectic solvents. The method showed superior performance compared to catalyst-free and sulfuric acid conditions, with potential for sustainable production. Additionally, the SC-SO3H catalyst can be easily reused, demonstrating the green and sustainable nature of this novel approach.
