Effects of co-digestion of food waste, corn straw and chicken manure in two-stage anaerobic digestion on trace element bioavailability and microbial community composition

Xianpu Zhu et al.

Summary: This study found that co-digestion of food waste, corn straw, and chicken manure in group A of two-stage anaerobic digestion resulted in higher hydrogen and methane production efficiency, as well as a higher bioavailability of trace elements within a wider range. Increased abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens reflected improved efficiency in two-stage methane co-digestion.

Improvement of sewage sludge anaerobic digestion through synergistic effect combined trace elements enhancer with enzyme pretreatment and microbial community response

Xinru Jiang et al.

Summary: The double E strategy, combining trace elements enhancer and enzyme pretreatment, effectively enhances sewage sludge anaerobic digestion efficiency. By promoting the growth of acetogens and protein fermenting bacteria, the strategy increases methane production and improves the overall efficiency of AD process.

Fate of Clostridia and other spore-forming Firmicute bacteria during feedstock anaerobic digestion and aerobic composting

Jessica Subirats et al.

Summary: Pathogenic spore-forming Firmicutes are commonly found in animal and human wastes used in crop production. Pre-treatment of organic waste can reduce the risk of contamination with pathogens in crops. Anaerobic digestion and aerobic composting can effectively reduce spore-forming Firmicutes, with temperature and moisture being key factors influencing the inactivation.

Simultaneous supplementation of magnetite and polyurethane foam carrier can reach a Pareto-optimal point to alleviate ammonia inhibition during anaerobic digestion

Ziyi Yang et al.

Summary: Material addition can effectively enhance methane production in anaerobic digestion process. The addition of magnetite thorn foam carrier showed a significant increase in methane production rate. Simultaneous supplementation of two materials resulted in the highest methane production rate. The activities of acetogenic and methanogenic bacteria were enhanced, and direct interspecies electron transfer was strengthened. Biofilm in the reactor exhibited higher microbial kinetic advantages, contributing to the enhanced methane production.

Bacterial two-component systems as sensors for synthetic biology applications

John T. Lazar et al.

Summary: Two-component systems (TCSs) are a common family of signal transduction pathways used by bacteria to sense and respond to various stimuli. Synthetic biologists are repurposing TCSs for applications in different fields, with the potential to discover new inputs and develop a wide range of genetically-encoded sensors that respond to diverse stimuli.
