Bipolar Electric-Field Switching of Perpendicular Magnetic Tunnel Junctions through Voltage-Controlled Exchange Coupling

Delin Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors demonstrate a bipolar electric field effect switching using voltage-controlled exchange coupling, which shows potential applications in energy-efficient memory and logic devices. The results indicate that this type of switch has a lower switching current density, which could eliminate major obstacles in the development of spin memory devices.

Symmetry-dependent field-free switching of perpendicular magnetization

Liang Liu et al.

Summary: An out-of-plane spin-orbit torque (SOT) has been observed in an HM/FM bilayer of CuPt/CoPt, referred to as 3m torque, allowing for field-free switching of perpendicular magnetization of the CoPt layer. The 3m torque depends strongly on the relative orientation of current flow and crystal symmetry, and shows good endurance in cycling experiments. Experiments with various SOT bilayers featuring low-symmetry point groups at the interface may reveal further unconventional spin torques in the future.

Critical switching current density of magnetic tunnel junction with shape perpendicular magnetic anisotropy through the combination of spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques

Doo Hyung Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the critical switching current density of MTJs with S-PMA through the interplay of STT and SOT using theoretical and numerical methods. The results showed that an increase in the current density inducing SOT leads to a decrease in the critical switching current density inducing STT, and increasing thickness increases J(STT,c) while increasing diameter decreases it. Additionally, the effect of thickness and spin-orbit field-like torque on J(STT,c) was explored, indicating that J(STT,c) decreases with increasing beta but slowly increases with increasing thickness and beta.

Different types of spin currents in the comprehensive materials database of nonmagnetic spin Hall effect

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found a strong relationship between spin Hall conductivity (SHC) and crystalline symmetry, with large SHC typically associated with mirror symmetry-protected nodal line band structures. They also identified 11 materials with substantial SHC, comparable to or larger than that of Pt. Different types of spin currents were found, and it was discovered that they can be obtained by rotating applied electrical fields.

Field-free magnetization switching induced by the unconventional spin-orbit torque from WTe2

Qidong Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, deterministic switching of perpendicular magnetization is achieved in the SrRuO3/WTe2 bilayer structure, attributed to the out-of-plane spin polarization from the van der Waals material WTe2. Analysis of the spin polarization matrix indicates that the reduced crystal symmetry in WTe2 is responsible for the out-of-plane spin polarization.

Large fieldlike torque in amorphous Ru2Sn3 originated from the intrinsic spin Hall effect

Thomas J. Peterson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temperature dependent current driven spin-orbit torques in layered structures with in-plane magnetic anisotropy consisting of Ru2Sn3/Co20Fe60B20 films. It was found that the amorphous Ru2Sn3 films exhibit unique fieldlike torque behavior in comparison to traditional spin Hall materials, with significant differences in torque efficiencies at room temperature and 50K. The research also revealed the impact of different types of spin Hall effects on the observed torques, with implications for reducing critical current and magnetization procession in ferromagnetic layers.

Observation of the Out-of-Plane Polarized Spin Current from CVD Grown WTe2

Shuyuan Shi et al.

Summary: Weyl semimetal Td-phase WTe2 with strong spin-orbit coupling is promising as a spin source material, and the generation of out-of-plane polarized spin in centimeter-scale CVD-grown thin films has been demonstrated. The in-plane and out-of-plane spin conductivities were found to be 7.36 x 10(3) (PLANCK CONSTANT OVER TWO PI/2e) (ohm m)(-1) and 1.76 x 10(3) (PLANCK CONSTANT OVER TWO PI/2e) (ohm m)(-1) in 5 nm-WTe2, respectively. Additionally, current-induced magnetization switching in WTe2/NiFe at room temperature suggests potential innovations in spintronic devices based on Weyl semimetals.
